Poonam Dhillon plays The Perfect Wife

After 50 successful performances of The Perfect Husband, actor Poonam Dhillon has taken centrestage as The Perfect Wife. The play will be staged on Tuesday evening in the city as part of the ongoing World Tourism Week.

Dhillon is here with the cast of the play, including Suraj Thappar, who plays the husband,as in the original play, director Nitin Jagdissh,Rekha Sahai of the Yatri group, also the producer of the play. Dhillon, not surprisingly,is excited to be back in her hometown. “I just need a reason to be back in Chandigarh and as always,it’s a delight,” she says adding that she is travelling all over the country with the play. After The Perfect Husband, quips the actor, this play was a natural progression though it wasDhillon who initially came up with the idea. “So many people would ask me why not create a play on a perfect wife, and it is finally here,” she says. The play’s cast remains unchanged and according to Thappar, the production is a joint, fun effort.

While humour is the play’s USP,Dhillon is quick to point out that there is a subtle message in the play, that women have a role to play in society,in their homes and their own life and that there’s more to them than just looks. “Most people appreciate women for their looks, but for women, achievement is as necessary and you want to be beyond just a pretty face,” she says. Dhillon plays the role of Tina,a Punjabi wife, who loves her home and husband, but wants to use her education and capabilities at work too. Prakash, played by Thappar is a typical male chauvinist who refuses to see beyond his wife’s stunning looks. “It’s a light play, and there’s a lot of humour,as we play upon the cultural differences, the inter-caste situation and there is a lot of love, laughter and life on stage,” she says. Dhillon admits there’s no perfect better half, and that a perfect spouse is a figment of the imagination. “But as long as you are perfect for each other,it works,” says the actor who is working on another theatre production Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi as also some films. “I’ve taken a break from television as it’s very time consuming and am really enjoying being on stage. It’s laborious but extremely gratifying,” she signs off. The play will be staged at Tagore Theatre on Tuesday at 6.30 pm.
