Former MLA from Delhi Jitender Singh Shunty was on Thursday appointed member of Punjab Human Rights Commission.

Shunty is the founder of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Sewa Dal. He was with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earlier and was MLA from Shahadra in Delhi. In December 2024, ahead of Delhi Assembly elections, he had joined the AAP in Arvind Kejriwal’s presence. However, he lost to BJP’s Sanjay Goyal in 2025 Assembly elections.

His appointment as a member of PSHRC is being seen as being “accommodated” in Punjab by AAP. The AAP is already facing flak for accommodating several of its Delhi leaders in the border state, the only state that it currently rules.

Shunty is widely respected for his humanitarian work and is a Sikh. With his appointment, the AAP has tried to give a message that a social worker and a Sikh has been given the post.

A government statement said that Shunty is known for performing the last rites of unclaimed bodies with dignity and compassion. In 2021, he was honoured with the Padma Shri by the President of India for his remarkable social service. He is also known for donating blood over a hundred times and has been featured in the acclaimed documentary “Angels for the Dead.”

For more than 25 years, Shunty has been recognised internationally as a pioneer in protecting the human rights of the dead, a crucial yet often overlooked part of the “Right to Life.” Through his NGO, he has provided funeral services, corpse vans, refrigerated mobile morgues, cremations, and immersion of ashes in the Ganga for abandoned and underprivileged individuals. He has facilitated the dignified last rites of over 70,000 people, including more than 4,200 Covid-19 victims.
