Taking suo motu notice of a news article on poor drainage and waterlogging on the Chandigarh-Ambala highway, the Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC) has sought a report from the Regional Office, National Highways Authority of India, Panchkula.
The Commission bench, headed by Justice Sant Parkash (chairperson), perused the detailed news item published in a national daily on July 25 that indicated there was waterlogging on a 2-kilometre stretch on the Chandigarh-Ambala Highway.
It ordered, “Let the matter be put up before the Regional Office, National Highways Authority of India, Panchkula, which may look into the complaint and submit a report to this Commission by the next date of hearing.”
The Commission asked for a copy of the order and a copy of the complaint to be sent to the Regional Office, National Highways Authority of India, Panchkula, through e-mail and by post for compliance, and listed the matter for October 25.
The Commission also took suo motu notice of another news article published on July 25 about a fire that broke out in a factory at Industrial Area Phase-II, Chandigarh. Two girls died of asphyxia, and three people were injured in the accident. The police have registered an FIR under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC against the factory owner.
The Commission ordered, “Let the matter be put up before the senior superintendent of police, Chandigarh, who may send the fresh status report of the abovementioned FIR to this Commission by the next date of hearing.” The matter has been listed for August 31.
The Commission issued notice to the SSP, Mohali, on the matter of a 10-year-old girl who went missing from Gur Aasra Trust, Sector 78, on July 14.
