Former Punjab Health Minister and senior Congress leader Balbir Singh Sidhu on Friday accused Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh of “deliberately obstructing” the construction of houses for poor families on a five marlas plot allotted by his party’s government in 2022.
“Fearing defeat, Kulwant Singh is resorting to intimidation tactics against poor families. The MLA is intimidating homeless beneficiaries, warning that their houses will not be allowed to be constructed unless they extend political support to him in the upcoming elections. “In Kurda and Raipur villages, false cases were registered against beneficiaries to harass them. One case is of a theft of only 31 bricks,” Sidhu alleged at a press conference.
Hitting back at Sidhu shortly after the latter’s press conference, Kulwant Singh said the Congress leader was “trying to be relevant by spreading misinformation”.
Terming Sidhu’s allegations “baseless political theatrics,” the Mohali MLA said, “I have no interest in participating in credit wars. We only focus on work, not propaganda. Poor families are getting their houses built, that’s what matters.” “I don’t know what the former minister keeps talking about. We worked for two years, completed all formalities for the Baliali village plots, and ensured that poor families received their allotment letters and began construction,” the MLA said, adding: “No one understands the poor’s pain better than me.”
Displaying some “official documents” at the press conference, Sidhu claimed that 70 residents in Baliali village, who recently received allotment letters from the MLA, had already been allotted plots in January 2022 under a policy framed by the then Congress government on October 1, 2021, to distribute village shamlat land among homeless people.
Accusing the ruling AAP government of being “anti-poor” for “stopping construction on legally allotted plots,” Sidhu said, “Instead of helping these families, the MLA is pushing them towards despair. Such harassment will not be tolerated. We will ensure justice for every rightful allottee.
Reminding Sidhu of his 15 years’ tenure as an MLA and a minister, Kulwant said, “Sidhu should name even one poor family he built a house for. We have constructed more than 70 houses for the needy. People know who truly works for them. Sidhu should stop doing drama for headlines and let us continue working for the welfare of the public.”
Speaking with The Indian Express, Kulwant Singh said, “When it comes to poverty and hardships, what does Sidhu even know? No one can understand the sufferings of the poor better than I do. I have lived those circumstances.”
Referring to the allegations made against him, the MLA said, “Does he (Sidhu) think he needs to teach me what the poor need or how they live? I know their struggles because I have been one of them.”
