Police foil attempted robbery at Reliance Jewels showroom, accused say got idea from ‘social media platforms’

The Chandigarh Police foiled an attempted robbery at a Reliance Jewels showroom in Manimajra and arrested two accused within 18 hours of the incident.

As per the police, the accused confessed that due to ongoing loans/liabilities, family expenses, they made a plan to rob the jewellery showroom and for this purpose, they purchased electric iron cutter, face mask, hand gloves, raincoats, knife etc.

They got this idea of robbing a jewellery showroom from various “social media platforms”.

According to the police, the case was reported in the early hours of September 22, when two masked men tried to break open the shutter of the jewellery store at NAC Market, Manimajra.

As per the police, the security guard on duty, Surendra Kumar, was threatened at knifepoint but managed to escape and alert fellow guards.

The suspects fled as guards raised the alarm.

Taking note of the case, three special teams were constituted — one to verify Reliance employees and related staff, another to scan CCTV footage from Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali, and the third to check records of previous convicts. The probe revealed links to Ambala, where suspicious vehicles were traced.

Acting on leads, the police arrested Himanshu, alias Sahil, (32) of Ambala Cantt and recovered a Honda Amaze car allegedly used in the crime, along with masks, gloves, raincoats, and other tools. At his instance, co-accused Sunny (31) of Yamunanagar was arrested the following day.

Both accused had frequent access to the showroom and were familiar with its internal setup.

Facing mounting debts and family expenses, they allegedly conspired to rob the outlet. They purchased cutters, masks, gloves, and other items after getting the idea from social media platforms, said the police.

During interrogation, the duo confessed to planning the heist.

The police have recovered tools, including hammers, a knife, a rope, and a lock allegedly used during the attempt.

Police officials said that an Honda Amaze car, masks, gloves, raincoats, rope, and lock-cutting tools, along with hammers, knife, and axe, have been recovered.
