Panjab University (PU) and Chandigarh University (CU) have both registered impressive performances in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026, underscoring Chandigarh’s growing presence in Asia’s higher education landscape.
PU recorded a significant improvement in its overall score, rising from 31.3 in 2025 to 42.6 in 2026, and secured the 276th rank in Asia. Although its position shifted marginally due to a larger pool of participating institutions, PU’s gains across all key indicators reflect steady academic and research advancement.
According to university officials, PU saw growth in every major metric. Citations per paper rose from 35.1 to 45.3, papers per faculty from 43.1 to 63.4, academic reputation from 28.7 to 35.7, and the faculty–student ratio from 15.6 to 28.3. The share of staff with PhDs jumped from 76.8 to 95.8, while the International Research Network indicator improved sharply from 44.4 to 75.8.
The university also showed a marked rise in internationalisation: the proportion of international students increased from 6.9 to 10.7, outbound exchange from 1.1 to 6.9, and inbound exchange from 1.9 to 7.6. Employer reputation improved from 30.7 to 39.2.
PU Vice Chancellor Renu Vig said the results reflected “measurable and broad-based improvement across research output, teaching quality, faculty qualifications, global collaborations, student mobility and employer perception.” She added, “The notable rise in citations, papers per faculty, and international partnerships demonstrates that our strategic initiatives are delivering tangible outcomes.”
Meanwhile, Chandigarh University has retained its title as India’s No. 1 private university for the third consecutive year, climbing 11 places to secure the 109th rank in Asia, the highest ever for a young private institution. CU now ranks 8th among all Indian universities and 16th among private institutions in Asia, with a total score of 66.6, up from 52.5 last year.
Chancellor and Rajya Sabha MP Satnam Singh Sandhu said, “It indeed is a proud moment that Chandigarh University has been recognised among the top universities in Asia and ranked No. 1 among all Indian private universities for the third consecutive year.”
He added that CU’s rise aligns with India’s growing stature as a global education hub, highlighting its 17,000 research papers, over 5,000 patents, and more than 150 start-ups supported by its Technology Business Incubator.
Senior Managing Director Deep Inder Singh Sandhu said Chandigarh University was the youngest University to feature in the top 200 HEIs in QS Asia University Rankings 2023. “So, our consistent rise in the QS Asia University Rankings clearly reflects the academic excellence achieved in such a short span of time.”
