Ordinary people and their lives inspire filmmaker Sona Jain
How in the world did you manage to make a movie like this? Youre not even married, writer-director Vishal Bhardwaj had said after the screening of my film,For Real, says 34-year-old filmmaker Sona Jain. I am single and yet managed to decode the life of a married couple. I guess its because I wrote it from a childs point of view, she adds. The film, which took nine years to complete,is what Jain describes as a side-effect of her years in New York as a film student.
If she managed to capture the layers marriages and relationships contain,Jain says its because she is a people watcher. I love to meet and interact with people. The beauty of life lies in the dynamics of human interaction, says Jain, having already garnered critical acclaim at various international festivals for her film. Seen from the eyes of a six-year-old,For Real is an entertaining yet moving take on everything that is going around her. Revolving around the lives of a busy workaholic father and a mother who has lost her sense of being,For Real is a movie that zooms into the lives of real people. These writings are my take on relationships. An artist never gives up the child in her, she says. For Real happened when I got homesick and started writing stories about Delhi and of this little girl. When you are writing without any agenda, magical things may happen.
The mechanics of being human appeals to me; why do we do the things we do,why at a heightened level of emotion do we say things we dont mean. Its the intention that intrigues me more than the action itself, says Jain, who managed to bring Zakir Hussain on board for the music.
As a director,Jain prefers not to judge her characters but present them as they are as in her first documentary,The Outsiders on the Hijra community in Delhi. Take the little girl in For Real – Zoya Hassan. Its a pleasure working with children. They are honest and true, and will never hesitate in calling a spade a spade. They are so delightful and speak from their heart as they see it. The mothers character has been played by actor Sarita Chowdhary. As for Adil Hussain, the father,he is not insensitive but just a busy man wrapped in his life which most people quite unconsciously are. I believe people are inherently good and they go out of their way to make their loved ones life happy. But our lives are such that one can experience a dip in sensitivity levels and in the process become unable to respond to others. We end up confused and lost, and found again.
The small hurts, however, pile up and make a huge mass of pain, and Jain focuses her camera on exactly that. Jain is now busy writing a comedy Rishtey hi Rishtey and working on her next script,Delhi Aaah. Set in the Capital,it brings together five lives from different backgrounds.
