Fondly known as Professor Venki Ramakrishnan, he was a recipient of the Nobel Prize for studies on the structure and function of the ribosome.

A structural biologist by profession, he did his under-graduate studies at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, and went on to pursue a PhD in Physics from Ohio University.

PU had decided to bestow its Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) on Professor Ramakrishnan, but he had expressed his inability to pay a visit to the varsity.

However, he had then informed PU vice-chancellor Arun Kumar Grover that he would someday interact with the varsity students.
