National climate change workshop gets underway at PU

Professor R C Sobti,Vice-Chancllor,Panjab University will inaugurate the national workshop on “Climate Change and Its Impact on Water Resources — Adaptation Issues” at the ICSSR Complex on Tuesday.

Professor R C Sobti,Vice-Chancllor,Panjab University will inaugurate the national workshop on “Climate Change and Its Impact on Water Resources — Adaptation Issues” at the ICSSR Complex on Tuesday at 10 am. Som Pal,former member of the Planning Commission of India will be the chief guest and Dinesh Pande,Director (Exploration),ONGC and Dr S C Dhiman,Chairman,Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) are the guests of honour.

The two-day workshop being organised jointly by the Centre of Advanced Study in Geology,Panjab University and Global Hydrogeological Solutions,New Delhi,will witness a galaxy of more than 25 geoscientists,engineers and environmentalists from reputed universities,research institutes and government organisations deliberating on theme significant issues in four technical sessions.

Dr D K Chadha,President,Global Hydrogeological Solutions,New Delhi,will sensitise the issues related to the theme of the workshop. Professor G S Gill,Chairman,department of Geology,Panjab University disclosed that the lectures will target the declining groundwater table and increased demand of surface water owing to climate variations. The climate change has threatened availability of freshwarter,increased conditions of drought and floods,reduced potential of hydroelectric power generation and Salt water intrusions.

The workshop will contribute to suggest ways to tackle degradation and depletion of water resources.

The department of Geology has arranged an ‘Alumni Get Together’ of its old students,scholars and teachers on this occasion on the evening of November 23 at 5.00 pm in the ICSSR Complex. This get-together is in continuation of previous meetings of the products of Geology Department. The occasion will witness a formal launch PUGAA (Panjab University Geologists’ Alumni Association).
