MP Report Card: Manish Tewari from Anandpur Sahib

While the AAP has fielded Malvinder Singh Kang , SAD has given ticket to Prem Singh Chandumajra. Congress has fielded Vijay Inder Singla and SAD (A) has named Khushalpal Singh Mann as its candidate from the seat. BJP is yet to announce a candidate.

MP profile

A former Union minister, Manish Tewari (58) is a two-time Lok Sabha MP. He was first elected on Congress ticket from Ludhiana in 2009 and from Anandpur Sahib in 2019 on Congress ticket. An advocate by profession who practices in the Supreme Court, Tewari is also an author and a regular guest columnist, writing for various publications. He started his political career at DAV College, Chandigarh, as president of National Student Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of Congress in 1981-82 and leading NSUI as national president from 1988 to 1993. He served as Indian Youth Congress (IYC) national president between 1998 and 2000 and was appointed national spokesperson of INC in 2008. In his two-terms as MP, he was a member of different committees of Lok Sabha. A resident of Chandigarh, Tewari was born in Ludhiana and brought up in Chandigarh. His father V N Tewari, a professor at Panjab University Chandigarh was killed by militants in 1984 in Chandigarh during a morning walk. Tewari’s mother Amrit Tewari was a dentist.

Locals rue that Tewari did not spend much time in the constituency after getting elected and mostly stays in Delhi, except for around past one year when he started visiting the constituency frequently. Tewari, on his part, says during his stint as Anandpur Sahib MP, he visited “over 1100 villages out of 1500 villages in the constituency” and remained in regular touch with the people. He says his presence in parliament and issues raised by him were testimony to his performance as MP.

Constituency profile

Anandpur Sahib constituency includes nine Assembly segments namely Garhshankar, Banga, Nawanshahr, Balachaur, Anandpur Sahib, Ropar, Chamkaur Sahib, Kharar and Mohali. The Lok Sabha seat houses one of the five Takhts (highest temporal seats) of Sikhism, Takht Kesgarh Sahib, and holds immense religious importance. The two other places of Sikh religious importance Chamkaur Sahib and Kiratpur Sahib are also located in this Lok Sabha constituency. The tenth guru of Sikhs Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa Panth, an order of purified Sikh community, on the day of Baisakhi in 1699 in Anandpur Sahib. Virasat-e-Khalsa, one of the largest museums in the world, spread over 6500 acres and depicting Sikh history, is located in Anandpur Sahib. Politically, Anandpur Sahib resolution demanding greater autonomy for the states among other issues relating to Punjab was adopted here in 1973 by Shiromani Akali Dal. Environmentally, the constituency boasts of forest areas, diverse flora and fauna, water bodies andwetlands, but has been staring at a massive environmental degradation due to illegal sand mining. Geographically, it starts right next near state capital Chandigarh and stretches on areas near Phagwara in Kapurthala district apart from areas located along Punjab-Himachal Pradesh border. The Bhakra-Nangal dam, the second tallest dam in Asia located at a gorge near the upstream Bhakra village in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh is about 13 kilometer upstream from Nangal township which falls in Anandpur Sahib parliamentary constituency.
