In a major anti-encroachment drive, the Mohali Municipal Corporation Wednesday conducted an extensive operation across Phase 1, Phase 3A, 3B1 and Phase 6. The team targeted illegal roadside vendors, hawkers, and dhabas operating without authorisation, seizing their goods and dismantling makeshift setups.
In Phase 3A, the team also took action against unauthorised structures erected behind showrooms. Several showroom owners were fined for placing generators and water tanks on public roads.
The Municipal Corporation officials stated that “encroachments on roads and footpaths have been causing severe traffic congestion and inconvenience to the public. Despite repeated warnings, many vendors continue to occupy public spaces illegally”.
The issue has been raised multiple times in the Municipal House meetings, with councillors demanding strict enforcement against roadside encroachments.
According to the municipal rules, vendors are only permitted to sell goods while moving and are not allowed to occupy fixed locations. However, many previously removed vendors had returned and set up permanent stalls again using boards and coverings. During Wednesday’s drive, officials found that some had even spread sacks and sheets to sell vegetables right at the same spots.
Municipal officers warned, “If these illegal activities continue, the next round of action will include confiscation of not just the carts and equipment but also the vegetables and fruits being sold.”
Residents appreciated the move and urged authorities to find a “permanent solution” to prevent recurring encroachments and ensure smooth movement for pedestrians.
The MC team, led by Mandeep Singh, said that the operation was carried out under the directives of the Municipal Commissioner. “A large number of items, including flower vendors’ goods and other materials, were seized from Phases 1 and 3A. Four challans were issued to showroom owners for encroachment. If anyone is found reoccupying public land again, their entire stock will be confiscated,” he said, adding that action was taken at 24 places.
