Acting on the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s directives, the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) has scheduled a high-level meeting on Thursday to resolve the long-pending dispute over the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT)-cum-commercial complex in Phase 6, Mohali, and the adjoining road.
When the ISBT was constructed, one side of the double road was encroached upon, reducing the road width by half. Over the years, a major portion of this stretch has caved in, leaving commuters with a dangerously narrow passage. This road directly connects to the highway and flyover, but because of its reduced width, traffic jams have become a daily ordeal.
Adding to public frustration, the ISBT remains non-operational to date, leaving investors who had poured money into the commercial project stuck for years without returns.
Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi has been spearheading the fight on this issue. In December 2024, he moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which then issued notices to the Municipal Corporation (MC) and GMADA, demanding answers. In May 2023, Bedi had highlighted the alarming condition of the road when nearly 20 feet of the original 30-foot stretch had collapsed into potholes, turning it into an accident-prone zone.
The high court directed all stakeholders to meet and resolve the matter. The situation worsened further during this year’s monsoon, when the road was damaged even more. Just two days ago, Bedi warned the government and administration of urgent public safety concerns if immediate repairs were not undertaken. The high court added that the petitioner in the case should also be invited.
Warning of strict intervention if consensus fails, the bench stated, “In case no settlement is reached between the parties, this court will pass appropriate orders in the interest of the general public.”
The case will next be heard on September 18.
The GMADA’s meeting will be chaired by GMADA’s Chief Administrator.
Officials from the MC, traffic police, NHAI, and the developers of the bus stand project C&C Towers Ltd. and Mahakram Developers Pvt. Ltd. have been invited.
The Deputy Mayor has also received a formal invitation from the GMADA to participate.
“I am hopeful that this meeting will finally bring a concrete solution to Mohali’s traffic crisis, the collapsing road, and the incomplete bus stand project. With the High Court now closely monitoring, I believe residents will soon see relief from this years-long problem,” Bedi said.
