Underscoring that the long-pending issue of the bus stand and the adjoining closed road as the city’s “misfortune”, Mohali Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi on Thursday warned of possible dangers, including a major road accident if the matter is not resolved soon.

Bedi was speaking at a meeting chaired by the GMADA Chief Administrator Vishesh Sarangal, which was convened on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The meeting was attended by representatives of the company operating the bus stand, the Municipal Corporation Commissioner, and several administrative officials.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for September 18, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court making it clear that if the parties fail to reach a consensus, the court will pass its own judgment.

Bedi said he is thankful to Chief Justice Sheel Nagu for taking the matter seriously and issuing strict directions to the officials, stressing that even the very meeting has been held under the orders of the high court.

The Deputy Mayor highlighted that the road adjacent to the bus stand has been closed for the past 14 years, causing severe traffic jams on a daily basis. Warning of possible dangers, he said, “if the issue of the road and the bus stand is not resolved soon, then just like the portion of the Chandigarh-Kharar National Highway near Verka Chowk caved in and was only temporarily filled with soil, the highway could collapse again during heavy rains. A major accident could happen overnight”.

He further said that the company present in the meeting expressed its willingness to construct the road but sought permission and infrastructure support from the GMADA. Stressing the need for cooperation, he said; “coordination between the company and the GMADA is crucial so that the public can be provided relief.”

“Denying infrastructure to the people of Mohali and failing to operationalise the bus stand for 14 years is a blot on the GMADA’s face. To erase this blot, it is essential that the road be opened without delay.”

According to Bedi, it was decided in the meeting that officials would conduct a technical review and submit their findings before the high court during the next hearing. Expressing hope, he said that a positive outcome may finally emerge this time. He also thanked the GMADA Chief Administrator and expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved soon. Bedi mentioned that the meeting was constructive and hinted that another round of talks may soon be held to reach a final solution.

Chief Administrator Vishesh Sarangal told The Indian Express that in the meeting, officials of different departments, the company constructing the bus stand, and Deputy Mayor, were present. “We will soon submit the details of the meeting to the high court,” Sarangal added.

Speaking to this correspondent, project head Harjinder Singh said, “we have told the GMADA to approve our drawings and allow us an electricity connection so that we can fully operationalise the bus stand”.
