Three men arrested in snatching cases escaped after breaking the lock-up of division number 3 police station of Ludhiana, early on Friday. Ludhiana police commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu Saturday suspended the SHO for negligence in duty. Two other policemen who were present at the police station during the incident have been booked.

Sidhu said that inspector Sanjeev Kapoor, SHO division number 3 police station, was suspended and transferred to Police Lines.

An FIR was registered against night munshi Jashandeep Singh and sentry Ramesh Parsad and three accused who escaped under Sections 223 and 224 of IPC.

Police sources said that the incident was captured in CCTV cameras installed inside the police station and the accused were seen breaking locks with an iron rod. They escaped after scaling the wall.

Police had arrested three accused — Kamal Kumar, Deepak Kumar and Jaswinder Singh — for allegedly snatching mobile phones and 12 such phones were recovered from them.

Sources said that the accused were taken to the court for hearing when one of them managed to sneak an iron rod. “It was the duty of the policemen on duty to frisk them before letting them inside the police station but it wasn’t done. Later the policemen kept sleeping when they broke the lock and escaped,” said the source. While one of the escapees has been arrested again, two are still absconding.
