A head constable (HC) has been booked for allegedly misbehaving, assaulting and intimidating the station house officer (SHO) of the New Shimla woman police station.

The suspect, identified as Rajiv Rajta, has currently been posted at the Shimla police lines.

The case came to light after cross-complaints were lodged, with both the SHO and the HC accusing each other of misconduct and assault.

Police sources said Rajta filed the first complaint, stating that he had on September 17 gone to the women’s police station to lodge a complaint, where “the SHO and home guard volunteer (HGV) Parmod Kumar assaulted me”. His complaint is under investigation, they said.

However, soon after, the woman SHO filed a counter-complaint against the head constable, accusing Rajta of misbehaving, physically assaulting and intimidating her on the police station premises. She further alleged that the head constable was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, sources said.

New Shimla police station SHO Inspector Manoj Kumar said an FIR was registered against Rajta based on preliminary findings on Sunday.

“We have found corroborative evidence supporting the allegations levelled by the woman police inspector, based on which a case has been registered. At the same time, the complaint filed by Rajta is also under investigation. His medical examination report is awaited. His blood and urine samples were collected to verify whether he was intoxicated during the incident,” the SHO said.

Sources said during the investigation, CCTV footage was examined, purportedly showing Rajta and the HGV standing together near a local liquor vend the same night when the alleged confrontation took place. The footage has been taken on record as part of the inquiry, they said.

“A case has been registered under sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult intent to provoke breach of peace) and 74 (criminal force to woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, at the New Shimla police station, and a detailed report has been forwarded to senior police officers for further departmental review,” the SHO added.
