Continuing his fine form, Chandigarh youngster Harjai Milkha Singh Friday won his Indian Golf union title in the last 18 months with a title win in the Indian Golf union Gujarat State Junior Boys Golf Championship played at Kalhaar Greens Golf Course, Ahmedabad. The 15-year-old Chandigarh Golfer, who is the son of Padma Shri Jeev Milkha Singh, edged out Arjun Dahiya of Haryana with an overall score of 10-under-278 to win his third title of the year.
“To win the third IGU title of the year is a special feeling. I have never won a title at Ahmedabad and winning the title here acts as a big motivation. The course was playing good as the greens were fast here with the rough being thick. So, the focus was to put the ball on the fairways and to putt well on the green. Putting was a bit challenging but I am glad that I could make a good score and win the title,” said Harjai, who is a student of Class 10 at Strawberry Fields High School, Sector 26.
Earlier in August, Harjai had won the title in the IGU Northern India Junior Boys Golf Championships played at Panchkula Golf Course. Last year, Singh had won the overall title in the IGU Southern India Junior Boys Golf Championship at Coimbatore. Harjai had first tried his hand at cricket and football at his school before he opted to play golf. In 2017, he won the Milkha Junior Challenge before he finished third in the US Kids Golf World Championships in Malaysia in 2018.
In 2023, Harjai had won the title in the U-13 category in the US Kids Golf European Championship in Scotland before he also competed in the Jersey Legends Cup at the Channel Islands as an amateur, where his father Jeev Milkha Singh competed as well. Earlier this year, he also played in two tournaments organised by the Thailand Golf Association, where he finished 16th and seventh. The youngster also played in the Huntsville Junior, organised by the American Junior Golf Association in July, where he finished 20th. Last month, Harjai had played in the inaugural edition of the Indian Golf Premier League first leg at Chandigarh, where he rubbed shoulders along with the likes of international winner Gaganjeet Bhullar and others.
“Playing in the IGPL was a new experience with no cut. As an amateur golfer, one rarely gets a chance to play along with professional golfers and to play alongside golfers like Gaganjeet Bhullar sir is a learning experience for any youngster. I plan to play in the IGU Eastern India as well the IGU RCGC Junior Matchplay tournament at Kolkata later this year before planning my schedule for next year,” said Harjai.
