On the day the Punjab government is scheduled to table a Bill in the Legislative Assembly to amend Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925 to make the transmission of Gurbani from Golden Temple free for all TV channels, Rabindra Narayan, the managing director and president of G Next Media Pvt Ltd, Tuesday said that all PTC Network channels are already designated as ‘free to air’ channels by the central government. G Next Media Pvt Ltd runs the PTC TV channel that has the exclusive rights to telecast Gurbani.
Challenging the Punjab council of ministers, Narayan announced a reward of Rs 1crore if they could show one customer who had to pay a fee to subscribe to Gurbani across the country.
In a tweet, Narayan said, “GURBANI IS ALREADY FREE. All PTC Network channels are designated as FREE TO AIR channels by Government of India. No cable operator, DTH operator charges any money. It is also available for free on YouTube and Facebook. So how are they claiming to make Gurbani Free To Air? We challenge the whole cabinet to bring one single customer bill where anyone has had to pay to subscribe to Gurbani across the country!! REWARD ONE CRORE RUPEES!”
Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann has come under fire from the Opposition for the proposed move with AAP’s political opponents slamming him for “interfering” in the religious affairs of the Sikhs.
The Sukhbir Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has called the move of the government a direct “government attack” on the Khalsa Panth and Sikh gurdwaras.
CM Mann has long been up in arms against the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)’s move to give the exclusive rights for telecasting Gurbani from the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) to PTC channel, which is owned by the Badal family.
The second day of the Vidhan Sabha session on Tuesday is set to be a stormy affair, with the Opposition already questioning the 14-month-old government on a number of issues.
