With the Census 2027 to be paperless and smartphone based, the first pre-test of actual field operations will be carried out in areas of Sector 22 and Sarangpur in Chandigarh. As part of the preparatory activities for the forthcoming Census, a three-day pre-test training Programme is being held in Chandigarh. The event is being held on November 3, 4 and 6 at Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, Chandigarh.
Senior officers and lead trainers are conducting sessions on house listing procedures, enumeration instructions, digital guidelines, self-enumeration option, and responsibilities of enumerators and supervisors. Trainers are also briefing the field staff on documentation, timelines, and use of digital tools during the operation.
The actual field operations (pre-test) will be conducted from November 10 to November 30 in selected areas of Sector 22 and Sarangpur. Detailed work will be carried out in selected wards of these areas.
Dr Navjot Khosa, director, Directorate of Census Operations, Chandigarh, guided the participants and emphasised the importance of accurate and timely data collection during the Census.
She highlighted that the upcoming Census will be conducted entirely in the digital mode, and proper capacity building at all levels is crucial to ensure quality and reliable data. Khosa underscored that a self-enumeration facility will be available for citizens, enabling them to fill their data online themselves during the notified period.
Naveen, SDM (Central) Chandigarh, also addressed the participants and delivered the keynote address. He informed that the upcoming Census will be smartphone-based, in which field functionaries will use mobile apps to collect data directly in the digital form.
The Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases — first one will be on house listing and housing Census and to be conducted in any one month between the period April 1, 2026 to September 30, 2026; and the second phase will be on population enumeration – to be conducted from February 9 to February 28, 2027.
Khosa appealed to the residents of these localities to kindly extend full support, provide correct information, and cooperate with the field staff to ensure smooth and successful conduct of the digital pre-test exercise.
