Every year, millions around the world suffer from the sudden and devastating effects of a brain stroke yet many fail to recognise its early warning signs. To address this, Fortis Hospital Mohali has launched the “Stroke Pe Rok – Recognise FAST, Act Faster” awareness campaign, urging the public to identify symptoms quickly and act immediately.
Highlighting the urgency, Dr (Prof) Vivek Gupta, additional director, Neurointervention and Director, Neuro Cath Lab at Fortis Mohali, said, “a stroke can strike anyone, at any time. The key is to act immediately. The quicker a patient receives medical attention, the higher the chance of a full recovery”.
The campaign focuses on the F.A.S.T. principle a simple yet powerful method to detect stroke symptoms early:
F – Face drooping: Does one side droop when the person smiles?
A – Arm weakness: Is one arm unable to lift or stay steady?
S – Speech difficulty: Are the words slurred or unclear?
T – Time: Call emergency services immediately.
Gupta emphasised that every minute counts. Quick recognition and immediate hospital care can prevent long-term disability and even save a life.
A major highlight of the campaign is the promotion of mechanical thrombectomy, an advanced, minimally invasive procedure that removes the blood clot causing the stroke. “This remarkable treatment can significantly improve recovery when performed promptly,” Gupta added.
The initiative, supported by Medtronic, aims to empower communities to act fast and spread awareness.“Stroke Pe Rok”is not just a slogan, it’s a life-saving mission, the campaign stresses.
