The police have registered an FIR against Shimla Mayor Sanjay Chauhan,Deputy Mayor Tikender Singh Panwar and CPM State Secretary Rakesh Singha for violating prohibitory orders and holding victory procession on Mall Road after the declaration of the Shimla Municipal Corporation results on May 28.

The case was registered against CPM leaders on the same day. According to the police,CPM leaders did not take permission to hold a such a procession on Mall Road.

“Since prohibitory orders are in place at the Mall, like processions and raising of slogans, the incident was a violation of norms,” said an officer.

The police personnel added that though they tried to stop the CPM procession and advised the leaders against entering Mall Road,no one paid heed to their objections.

Shimla SP Sonal Agnihotri confirmed that a case has been registered under Section 115(2) of Himachal Pradesh Police Act and 188 of IPC against CPI workers.

Newly elected Mayor Sanjay Chauhan, however, sought to downplay the FIR.

“The police has its own role to play, but we as political party will do our job. The only thing that upsets us is that the Congress and BJP were equally guilty of violations. We will prove that their workers — some completely drunk — also took out rallies on the Mall Road and raised slogans.”
