Diarrhoea outbreak in Mohali: 6-year-old dies, 84 hospitalised

A six-year-old died with diarrhoea in Mohali on Tuesday as the massive spread of the disease rang alarm bells in the district.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Aashika Jain confirmed the death of the child, and said that the health department is keeping a check on the affected areas. “We should continue with early detection camps to identify the pockets where the cases are more besides distribution of chlorine tablets, ORS pouches and Zinc tablets,” Jain said.

In an evening review of the outbreak on Tuesday, the deputy commissioner said that so far a total of 84 patients were under diarrhoea treatment at various government hospitals, and include 70 patients at District Hospital at Mohali, eight at Dera Bassi, four at Kurali, and one each at Kharar and Dhakoli.

She underscored the need of increasing IEC activities (awareness drive) launched by Health and Family Minister Balbir Singh on Tuesday, adding that it would be helpful to make people aware of the symptoms besides taking preventive measures.

The civil surgeon has also been directed to plan more camps in affected areas. She said that the maximum coverage of the people of vulnerable area would help in containing the spread of disease.

Jain also asked the Water Supply and Sanitation department to check the pipelines of the affected areas thoroughly. She urged officials to work in flood-duty mode to save people from the spread of diarrhoea and cholera.
