Residents continue to face serious harassment from the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), which is allegedly creating obstacles in property transfers even when a registered will is already in place. Citizens complain that despite legally valid and duly registered wills, officials insist on the presence of all legal heirs, demand unnecessary documents, and prolong the verification process forcing people to run from pillar to post for months. Many claim that certain junior-level officials have turned the process into a “source of corruption”.
People say that GMADA repeatedly summons other legal heirs even when the will is clear and uncontested, causing unnecessary harassment, delays, and even disputes.
This is not the first time the matter has been highlighted. A few months ago, affected individuals had met local MLA Kulwant Singh, who wrote to senior Housing Department officials seeking an immediate solution. However, with no visible improvement on the ground, residents continue to suffer.
Bhupinder Singh Sabharwal, deputy president of the Tricity Property Consultant Federation, said that families already grieving the loss of a loved one are further harassed by the GMADA officials during death-case transfers. He said he personally raised the issue during the GMADA’s recent grievance redressal camp before Chief Administrator Sakshi Sahni.
Responding to queries, MLA Kulwant Singh acknowledged to The Indian Express that the issue has resurfaced and assured firm action. “The matter has come to my notice again. I will ensure a permanent solution within a few days. No one with a registered will should have to run around GMADA’s offices. The Aam Aadmi Party government is committed to delivering services at people’s doorsteps not troubling them,” he added.
GMADA Chief Administrator Sakshi Sahni stated to The Indian Express that the GMADA is already working on business processing re-engineering to re-examine any procedures which cause unnecessary delays to cut out any chances of harassment, pick and choose etc.
