Paradox
Claiming to be spearheading the cause of innocent people who have been awarded the death penalty, the lawyers for Human Rights International have recently launched a report advocating the abolition of the death sentence worldwide. It seems that the lawyers, however, suffered a dearth of suitable references from India in support of their statements. While they have apparently cited many examples of prisoners facing the death penalty in China,Taiwan and Singapore, they could not find a better example than that of Devender Pal Singh Bhullar from the country.
‘Promotion’ time
Visits to the chambers of high court judges by lawyers, off late, have increased. Reason: names of lawyers for designation of senior lawyer and elevation to high court judgeship are being contemplated by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. All candidates vying, either for the designation of senior lawyer or high court judgeship, are keeping quiet about their visits. Those unsure of their promotion are seeking advice of their seniors and requesting them to put in a word of reference.
All for votes
The bitter contest between Congress candidate Chander Mukhi Sharma and the BJP-SADs Harjinder Kaur for ward 15 is such that the two seem to leave no stone unturned in taking digs at one another. Harjinder quips: I keep telling the residents of my wards that pardesiyon se na akhiya milana . They might not be found here when required.
Daring theft
The growing incidents of theft in the past few weeks finally claimed its first police victim. Someone stole the jacket of a station house officer(SHO) from the police lines,Sector 26 where the officer had come to take part in a parade. He had handed over his jacket to a cop who had kept it somewhere. After completion of the parade the jacket was nowhere to be found.
Mandatory play!
The recently concluded cricket tournament of the UT Administration had the officials huffing and puffing for breath. While the officials were performing their official work during the day,in the evenings, they all had to reach the Sector cricket stadium for practice sessions. An employee of UT Administrations engineering department who was also participating in the tournament said: Kya kare bhai karna padta hai… Din me naukri, sham ko boss to bowling .
