Former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi is poised to contest from the Jalandhar parliamentary seat. Though the Congress is yet to make an official announcement about his candidature, which is likely to come around April 12-13, Channi has rented a spacious house in Shri Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, near Model Town in Jalandhar, for two months reportedly for his election campaigns.

The Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat has become the focal point of political attention, witnessing significant political developments.

Supporters of Channi marked his birthday by presenting a cake with “Sadha Channi Jalandhar” written on it, signalling their strong endorsement of his candidature. The resignation of Congress MLA Vikramjit Chaudhary from the post of the party’s chief whip in the Punjab Assembly has further intensified the political tension, as Chaudhary voiced opposition to Channi’s candidacy in Jalandhar.

Channi’s renting a 45-marla house, currently under renovation, signals the strategic groundwork being laid for his election campaign.

Sources said the rent agreement was finalised around two weeks ago. The plan is also afoot to rent three additional houses for party workers in Jalandhar, they said.

Amritpal Bhonsle, a confidant of Channi, affirmed the strategic move to rent the house to accommodate party workers. Congress supporters are, meanwhile, actively leveraging social media platforms to disseminate videos of Channi’s engagements with local communities.
Channi’s recent visits to various religious sites in Jalandhar and interactions with diverse groups further bolster his support base, as is evident by the praise he garnered from a religious song singer in a recent Facebook post.

In Jalandhar, recent defections, with former AAP MP Sushil Rinku and MLA Sheetal Angural joining the BJP, add to the intrigue.

Furthermore, speculations are rife about Congress MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary and his mother Karamjit Kaur potentially aligning with the AAP, with an announcement expected soon in Chandigarh.

As the Lok Sabha elections drawing closer, political activities in Jalandhar have intensified. Various prominent leaders, including Karamjit Kaur, the wife of late Congress MP Santokh Singh, and retired SSP Rajinder Singh are also vying for a ticket for the Jalandhar LS seat. Rajinder Singh recently held a rally in Kartarpur, flexing his muscles to exert pressure on the Congress to nominate him from Jalandhar.
