For some, a car is not complete without the perfect number plate. In Chandigarh, that obsession has now rewritten records — the prestigious ‘0001’ number of the CH01-DA series fetched Rs 36.43 lakh in the Registering and Licensing Authority’s (RLA) latest e-auction, making it the costliest registration number ever sold in the city.

The second highest bid was won by ‘0003’ (Rs 17.84 lakh), followed by ‘0009’ (Rs 16.82 lakh). The auction for ‘0007’ number also witnessed a tight fight by James Bond fans, obsessed with his ‘007’ intelligence code. The number fetched Rs 16.50 lakh in th auction.

With this, RLA, Chandigarh, also fetched an all-time record revenue of Rs 4.08 crore in its latest e-auction of vanity numbers. Officials confirmed this is the highest-ever revenue collected from a single auction of vehicle numbers in the city.

The bidding war for the most coveted number of the series, CH01DA0001, drove the number well beyond its reserve price of Rs 50,000, as multiple participants competed fiercely for ownership.

Breaking previous record

The previous record for the most expensive number in Chandigarh was set in May 2025, when CH01-CZ ‘0001’ was sold for Rs 31 lakh in an e-auction that generated Rs 2.94 crore overall. Then, too, the number ‘0001’ had witnessed aggressive bidding, eventually being sold at over 60 times its reserve price.
In the May auction, the second-most expensive number was ‘0007’ at Rs 13.60 lakh, followed by ‘9999’ at Rs 9.40 lakh, and ‘0009’ at Rs 9.17 lakh. However, the August auction not only broke the single-number record with Rs 36.43 lakh but also significantly boosted the overall collection by more than Rs 1.1 crore.
