Panic gripped visitors at Sukhna Lake on Thursday evening when a man drove his car onto the pedestrian track with his family inside. The white Swift car, in which the driver’s wife and children were also seated, was seen moving along the walkway — an area strictly prohibited for vehicles.
According to eyewitnesses, people on the track were startled when they suddenly saw the car approaching. Many rushed to the sides to avoid being hit, while others shouted loudly to alert the driver. However, the driver, with the car windows rolled up, reportedly did not hear their calls and continued driving ahead.
Hearing the commotion, police personnel from the Sukhna Lake police post quickly reached the spot. They positioned themselves ahead on the track and signalled the driver to stop. Upon questioning, the man claimed that he was a visitor from outside Chandigarh and was unaware that driving on the track was prohibited.
Police officials stated that the driver had entered the track through the lake’s backside gate, where a temporary passage had been opened for trucks. The police issued a traffic challan, gave him a strict warning, and directed him to exit the track immediately. He was also informed that if such an act was repeated, a case would be registered against him.
The entire incident, which occurred around 7 p.m. on November 6, was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media. The footage shows the white Swift car being driven on the pedestrian path while numerous people were out walking and exercising.
A police official said that the Sukhna Lake walkway is a complete no-vehicle zone, meant only for walking and fitness activities and the unauthorised entry of vehicles in the area poses a serious safety risk to visitors, especially during evening hours when the promenade is crowded with locals and tourists alike.
