Former chief minister and BJP leader Capt Amarinder Singh has expressed his support for an alliance between Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

During an interview with a news channel on Monday, Singh, who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the evening, said that this alliance would benefit both the parties. He also said that he had discussed this rapprochement with Punjab BJP state president Sunil Jakhar and former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal, who also favoured such an alliance.

It is noteworthy that discussions on this alliance were going on, but they paused after the ‘Dilli Chalo’ agitation by farmers. Sources said that Singh also discussed this matter with BJP national president JP Nadda.

The Akali Dal had severed ties with the BJP in September 2020 following the passage of the three farm laws.

Singh conveyed optimism about a strong SAD-BJP alliance in Punjab, emphasising its potential benefits if formed before the Lok Sabha polls. Regarding the farmers’ agitation, he stressed the importance of hearing farmers’ concerns while condemning any violence. “They have every right to protest in Delhi but there shouldn’t be any violence.”

He said he had held a meeting with PM Modi on various Punjab-related issues. He said the PM was deeply concerned about farmers.

Commenting on the Centre’s proposal to the protesting farmers, Singh said it is premature to comment on it until it is officially announced.

Addressing a dharna by BKU Ugrahan members outside his house, Singh reiterated his unwavering support for farmers, stating that the ongoing agitation wouldn’t negatively impact BJP’s standing.

Amarinder, accompanied by his daughter and President of Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha, Jai Inder Kaur, maintained his consistent stance in favour of farmers and assured that the state leadership had conveyed their concerns to the BJP high command for a prompt resolution.
