A man from Punjab’s Moga district allegedly died by suicide after he failed to migrate to Canada despite paying Rs 9 lakh to a travel agent.

The police have booked the travel agent along with a financier from whom the deceased had reportedly taken Rs 9 lakh loan, for the alleged abetment to suicide.

The deceased was identified as Gagandeep Singh, 26, from Khukrana village of Moga district.

Harjit Kaur, mother of the deceased, in her complaint to the police, said that her son Gagangdeep wanted to migrate to Canada so they had hired a local travel agent couple – Shifu Goyal and his wife Rina Goyal, of Friends Colony, Moga.

Kaur said that the couple had demanded Rs 9 lakh to prepare her son’s documents for sending him to Canada.

She said that since her son did not have this much money, he paid Rs 70,000 in advance to the couple.

She said that Shifu Goyal himself arranged a financier, identified as Gurdeep Singh Ahluwalia (owner of Deep Finance), and on Shifu’s asking, Ahluwalia transferred Rs 9 lakh into Gagandeep’s bank account. Kaur further said that soon Shifu took a signed blank cheque from her son Gagandeep and transferred Rs 9 lakh into his account.

Kaur further told police that the Goyals neither sent her son to Canada despite taking Rs 9 lakh, nor returned the money.

She said that the finance company then filed a court case against her son demanding Rs 9 lakh back. However, her son was not in the position to return such a big amount. She said that her son was pushed into mental depression as he would keep thinking how to return the money. She further said that the travel agent and the financier, in connivance with each other, duped her son and pushed him to take the extreme step.

Police said that on Wednesday (October 7), Gagandeep consumed poisonous substance and was rushed to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot, but he could not survive and died undergoing treatment.

Police registered an FIR against Shifu Goyal, Rina Goyal- the agents- and financier Gurdeep Singh Ahluwalia under the sections 108 (abetment to suicide) and 3(5) (act done with common intention) of BNS at Sadar Moga Police station.
