A 68-year-old businessman and philanthropist, who hailed from Punjab’s Ludhiana district and was settled in Canada for years, was shot dead near his home in Abbotsford in British Columbia province Monday.

Darshan Singh Sahsi ran a successful cloth and textile recycling business in Canada, and also had business interests in Punjab. Sahsi hailed from Rajgarh village near Doraha of Ludhiana district.

In a statement, the Abbotsford police said the “homicide incident on Ridgeview Drive was being investigated.”

“At approximately 9.22 am this morning, Abbotsford Police Patrol officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 31300 block of Ridgeview Drive. Upon arrival, officers secured the area and confirmed the incident was confined to a single parked vehicle on the roadway. Inside the vehicle, they discovered a 68-year-old man suffering from life-threatening injuries,” the Abbotsford police said in a statement.

“Despite lifesaving medical efforts of first responders, the man succumbed to his injuries. No arrests have been made at this time. The investigation is still in its early stages, and additional resources have been deployed to support efforts in uncovering the full circumstances surrounding this incident,” said the police.

“The Abbotsford Police Department’s Major Crime Unit is transitioning the investigation to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which will be providing further updates as the investigation advances,” they said.

Sahsi ran a multinational cloth-recycling business, and was considered a respectable NRI business tycoon in both India and Canada.
