Jalandhar: A few days after the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs had brought out a guidance booklet on Marriages to Overseas Indians,containing information on safeguards available to women deserted by their NRI spouses,UK Member of Parliament Varinder Sharma on Monday described the issue as a social menace which should be taken up by the Indian government through its embassies located in various countries. Sharma,who originally hails from Jalandhar,told mediapersons: With this approach,justice can be provided to these deserted wives.
Karmapa appeals to Chinese authorities
Shimla: The 17th Karmapa,Ogyen Trinley Dorje,has expressed shock over the incidence of self-immolation in Tibet and asked the Chinese authorities to take steps to stop such incidents by treating the protests as humanitarian issues rather than a matter of political opposition. In a statement issued from Bodh Gaya on Monday,Karmapa said,I call on the authorities in Beijing to see the past and acknowledge the real human distress of Tibetans in Tibet and take full responsibility for what is happening there.

Three teenagers killed in fire
Jind: Three teenagers were killed when a fire broke out in a shop here,police said. The incident happened on Amarheri road on Sunday. The victims identified as Raj Kumar (16),Rajit Ram (14) and Raju (18) all residents of Uttar Pradesh used to work in the shop. The fire broke out due to gas cylinder leakage.
Haryana cop killed in road accident
Ambala: A police officer was killed and a constable seriously injured when a truck hit their van here,police said on Monday. The PCR van was stationed on the GT road near Ambala Cantt when the incident occurred. ASI Surender Singh was killed while Constable Jasmer Singh was seriously injured. The truck driver was arrested.
Vigilance nabs 3 civic agency staffers
Chandiogarh: The Haryana State Vigilance Bureau has caught three employees of Faridabad Municipality for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a person. An official spokesman on Monday said cases had been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
