Haryana cabinet Minister Ranjit Singh Chautala Tuesday blew the bugle of rebellion making it clear that he will contest the October 1 Assembly elections in state from Rania, a seat that he represented in the Vidhan Sabha before he gave up the membership of the Vidhan Sabha to contest the Lok Sabha polls earlier this year.

“I am a politician. If the BJP gives me a respectable spot [to contest], it is fine otherwise I shall definitely contest from Rania. BJP apna khud dekh le [BJP can take care of itself]”, Ranjit Singh told media persons in Chandigarh.

Ranjit Singh had formally joined the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. The son of former deputy prime minister Devi Lal, Ranjit Singh had contested as Independent candidate from Rania in 2019 and won. This time, he is again eyeing the same seat as BJP nominee. He is also wary of the growing intimacy between BJP and the Gopal Kanda-led Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP). Gopal Kanda’s brother Govind Kanda has announced his son Dhawal Kanda as HLP’s nominee in Rania.

“Chief Minister [Nayab Singh Saini] came to Sirsa and went to Kanda’s residence [last month]. After that, he announced that the party [BJP] will contest in alliance with HLP on 15 seats. Subsequently, Kanda declared his son as HLP’s nominee in Rania. I did not find it appropriate,” said Ranjit Singh, the energy minister in Saini-led government.

On speculation that he was going to resign from the BJP and join Congress, Ranjit Singh said, “The times keep changing”.
