Three police constables posted at the District Crime Cell (DCC) in Chandigarh were suspended Friday with immediate effect for dereliction of duty. The policemen were dealing with three gamblers who were held for illegal betting amid the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).

The suspended police personnel were identified as constables Hansa Ram, Manjit Singh and Sandeep Kumar. A probe was ordered against the three to ascertain if they demanded money from the gamblers to release them.

Sources said, “Three alleged gamblers identified as Parth, Nitin and Gagan were rounded up yesterday (Thursday) afternoon but not formally arrested. Around 9 pm, someone made a call at the police control room and said the three men were kidnapped and kept illegally in Sector 24 where the office of the District Crime Cell is situated. Senior police officers, including an IPS and two DSPs, rushed to the spot. They found the three there but there was no money trail.”

SSP (UT) Kanwardeep Kaur said, “We suspended three constables of the District Crime Cell for dereliction of duty. The three men who used to gamble on IPL matches were found at the District Crime Cell premises in Sector 24. An FIR was lodged against the three gamblers too. A small amount was recovered from them. A probe has been ordered against the three constables to check their conduct.”

Sources said cash worth Rs 6,400 was recovered from Parth, Nitin and Gagan, who used an online application to gamble.
