A 47-year-old woman and her 24-year-old son were found dead, while her husband survived an alleged suicide bid due to “financial constraints” at their house in Vadodara city Tuesday. The Raopura police has begun a probe into the alleged mass suicide even as Mukesh Panchal remains critical at SSG Hospital.

The police, who were initially probing if Panchal had killed his wife and son before attempting suicide, stated that primary autopsy reports indicate no foul play in the death of Naina and her son Mitul.

Meanwhile, Panchal, while he was being wheeled into the Hospital, told mediapersons that the family was “struggling to find money to eat and live”.

The Panchal family, residing at Piramitar road, allegedly consumed poison. When the police arrived at the spot, Mitul was found hanging from a ceiling hook, while his mother was found dead on the floor. Panchal, who had also consumed poison and inflicted wounds from a blade on his neck, however, survived after calling out for help, the police said.

“The primary autopsy reports have indicated that the son (Mitul) died by hanging and the wife consumed excessive poison, which in the opinion of the doctors, cannot be force-fed. The man, Panchal, inflicted serious injuries on his own neck after consuming poison and is critical at SSG hospital… his condition deteriorated during the day and he had to be put on the ventilator,” said Raopura Inspector Pooja Tiwari.

Even as the police are investigating the cause of the mass suicide, prima facie, it appears to be “grave financial constraints”, she said. “No note has been recovered from the house, but we have come across some documents that indicate that they were finding it had to survive on the meagre salary of Panchal who works as a security guard at a private agency… The son was unemployed and his wife was a homemaker. The extended family of the Panchals has arrived, but they claim that they were out of touch for over 15 years,” she said.

Earlier in the day, the forensic experts recovered the poison consumed by the family as the police began the probe into the deaths.

“The only area of mystery was the son’s hands that were tied, but since the autopsy report has confirmed hanging, it is possible that they had a suicide pact and he was helped in order to be able to execute his hanging… We have registered a case of accidental death and will question Panchal if and when he recovers,” Tiwari said.
