According to sources in the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL), the much-awaited 12.75 km-long Whitefield-KR Puram metro line is likely to be inaugurated on March 25. However, officials did not provide clarity on when operations might begin on the stretch.

A BMRCL official also stated that a total of seven trains manufactured by BEML, a PSU under the defence ministry, will be pressed into service on the KR Puram-Whitefield section. It may be recalled that BEML bagged a Rs 400 crore order for the supply of 42 metro coaches to BMRCL.

“The trains are expected to run at a frequency of 12 minutes. While the total workforce of the loco pilots on the purple line is 106, we will get some of them for the KR Puram and Whitefield line,” said a BMRCL official. The official added that while the overall structure of the seven trains on the new stretch will be similar to the existing structure of metro trains, there will be a slight modification in terms of operational convenience.

BMRCL is also expected to complete the trial runs on the stretch soon and address all operational snags.

Meanwhile, BMRCL managing director Anjum Parvez said: “We have officially not decided on any dates for now. But we are hoping to operationalise the stretch before the end of this month.”

According to BMRCL officials, there are some pending works in certain metro stations, especially the KR Puram metro station. These include civil work like glass fixing, and signage board maintenance, among others.

While the KR Puram-Whitefield stretch is part of the metro route between Baiyappanahalli and Whitefield stations, the work between KR Puram and Baiyappanahalli will start only by June. Metro services will reduce the travel time between KR Puram and Whitefield to 24 minutes, which would otherwise take over an hour by road.
