A day after Prajwal Revanna, who is facing sex abuse allegations, said he would return to the country, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Tuesday the Hassan JD(S) MP was coming back as his diplomatic passport is set to expire on May 31.
Revanna, who is contesting Karnataka’s Hassan Lok Sabha seat again, left the country on April 27, hours before the first First Information Report (FIR) alleging sexual assault was filed against him. The Karnataka government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the charges against the MP. On Monday, he released a video saying he would appear before investigating officials at 10 am on Friday, May 31.
“I have heard that his passport will expire on May 31. If he loses the (Lok Sabha) elections, his (MP) membership will also end. Automatically, his diplomatic passport will be seized. After learning about all this, maybe he has decided to return to the country,” Parameshwara told reporters.
Parameshwara said the state government had done everything possible to ensure his arrest. An arrest warrant and a blue corner notice were issued against the MP. “If he did not return, Interpol would have intervened by learning his location,” he said, adding that Revanna’s decision to surrender before investigating officials was right.
On Monday, the Karnataka home minister said the state government would arrest the MP as soon as he lands in the country citing the warrants issued against him.
Meanwhile, his mother Bhavani Revanna moved a local court for anticipatory bail in a case of kidnapping of a rape victim. Prajwal Revanna’s father H D Revanna was arrested on May 13 in the kidnapping case of the alleged sexual assault victim after the special court rejected his anticipatory bail plea on May 4. The JD(S) MLA was later released on regular bail on May 13 after the victim was traced by the SIT.
