After a social media post by Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw regarding the state of roads in Bengaluru went viral, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and others have said that efforts are underway to improve the condition of roads in the city.

In an X post, Shaw said on Monday evening, “I had an overseas business visitor to Biocon Park who said ‘Why are the roads so bad and why is there so much garbage around? Doesn’t the Govt want to support investment? I have just come from China and can’t understand why India can’t get its act together especially when the winds are favourable?’.”

The post received 13,000 likes within a day as it went viral on various platforms.

Shivakumar took to X on Tuesday to respond to the concerns raised by Shaw. “Bengaluru has given opportunities, identity, and success to millions – it deserves collective effort, not constant criticism. Yes, challenges exist, but we’re addressing them with focus and urgency. ₹1,100 crore has been sanctioned for road repairs, 10000+ potholes identified, and over 5000+ already fixed on priority. Major infrastructure works are underway to make Bengaluru more globally competitive,” he said.

Under the Greater Bengaluru Authority, East Corporation alone will now retain ₹1,673 Cr of its own revenues to directly improve infra in 50 wards, directly benefiting our IT corridors, he said. “With major works like the CSB–KR Puram redevelopment, Elevated Corridors, we are strengthening infrastructure for citizens, employees, and companies alike. Instead of tearing Bengaluru down, let’s build it up – together. The world sees India through Bengaluru, and we owe it to our city to rise united!”

Industries Minister M B Patil said that heavy rain in Bengaluru over the past few months had resulted in potholes. Noting that around Rs 1,000 crore was sanctioned to fill up the potholes, he said that work was progressing. “When the work is going on, tweeting (about) it again is not in good taste,” he said.
