BBMP, NGO plan to revive Bengaluru’s tradition of naming bus stops after trees

While crossing the Vega City mall at Bannerghatta road, one has seldom noticed a bus stop named ‘Jeedi Mara’, a Kannada word which in English means cashew tree. With infrastructural projects taking a toll on the green spaces, the cashew trees were axed and the history behind the name of the bus stop went into oblivion. An NGO Project Vruksha Foundation along with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has now planned to plant ten cashew saplings around the Jeedi Mara bus stop. The history behind the naming of the bus stop will also be put up at the spot.

Project Vruksha Foundation Vijay Nishanth said, “We proposed the plan to the BBMP and they will provide us with the necessary equipment and manpower to support the project. The word Jeedi Mara is also not in use. One can see the semblance of this beautiful tradition of naming streets and bus stops after trees and lakes. Be it the Margosa Road or the Sampige Road in Malleshwaram and Hunasemara stop in Banashankari or Jeedi Mara stop, Aralimara stop in Chikkalasandra. Now why can’t we revive this tradition and give an impetus to tree plantation at a time when we are losing green space.”

NIRF Rankings: University of Mysore achieves best NIRF rankings in its history

The 105-year-old University of Mysore (UoM), a state-run varsity in Karnataka, has witnessed an improvement in its place in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2021, of which standings were announced earlier today.

At NIRF 2021, UoM was placed 19th and 34th in the 'University' and 'Overall' categories respectively. "It is really a quantum jump in the performance of the University in spite of the dwindling number of permanent faculty members and other limiting factors. This is the best performance of the University in NIRF rankings so far," Vice-Chancellor G Hemantha Kumar said.

Last year, UoM was adjudged 27th and 47th in the 'University' and 'Overall' categories respectively. The Central government began NIRF rankings in 2015 to assess Higher Educational Institutions across the country in different segments.

The ranking framework judges institutions under five broad generic groups of parameters of Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PR). Ranks are assigned based on the total sum of marks assigned for each of these five broad groups of parameters.

Karnataka forest department expects significant rise in tiger population in 2022 census

The Karnataka Forest Department (KFD) is geared up for Tiger Census 2022, expecting a considerable improvement in the state’s tiger population. In Tiger Census 2018, Madhya Pradesh led the overall chart in India with 526 tigers, followed by Karnataka with 524 and Uttarakhand with 442.

Sharing his thoughts with The Indian Express, Vijaykumar Gogi, principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife) and chief wildlife warden, said conservation initiatives like least human intervention in their prey and breeding areas could culminate into something good. He said it would not be prudent to do guesswork and give out the figures now.

“One of the major things we have done in the past few years is to have reduced anthropogenic (originating in human activity) pressures so that tigers can breed. However, birth rate is not the only way to determine the number of tigers. We have set up camera traps, and the forest guard members also track the movement of tigers by their scat (animal droppings). Every animal has its own scat pattern. The guidelines of carrying out the census are laid down by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA),” Gogi said.

Bengaluru: Class VIII student claims barred from asking queries in online class, edu dept promises action

A Class VIII student of a private school in Bengaluru has alleged that she was disallowed from clearing her doubts during online classes and moved to another section where the students, she claimed, were not allowed to ask questions and had to keep their microphones muted all the time.

While the school’s management said they were unaware of any such incident, the block education officer said he had asked the school to send back the student to her original section a fortnight ago.

In a letter addressed to the principal of VIBGYOR School in Horamavu on September 5, the student alleged she was moved to another section as a “punishment” by the school.

No charging points, Bengaluru e-bike owner uses fifth-floor kitchen for recharge

An electric scooter owner in Bengaluru had to take his e-scooter to the fifth floor of his apartment complex to recharge it in his kitchen due to a lack of charging points at the building.

Vish Ganti, vice president (product management and GM) with AutoGrid India, posted his woes on LinkedIn where he stated, “My apartment community in the so-called EV capital of India (Bangalore) wouldn’t let me install an EV charging point, after trying to educate them and fighting an uphill battle for 4 months. So I decided to load up my scooter in the elevator and bring it up to my unit on (the) 5th floor to charge it in the kitchen, as a sign of protest and to create awareness of this ground reality.”

Ganti advised others not to repeat what he did as there were risks from shock and fire. “Everyone needs to be educated about the importance of EV charging infrastructure. We recently rolled out the EV charging handbook for India…but the question still remains how do residential communities and common people understand the intricacies living with an EV (sic),” his post read.
