An all-party meeting would be convened in Karnataka to discuss inter-state water disputes in the first week of February, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has said. Speaking to media after a video conference on the disputes, Bommai said that the meeting discussed disputes related to the Krishna, Cauvery river basins and the Mahadayi project which are before the courts. Another video conference would be conducted to discuss all these issues by the end of January.

Bengaluru registered a dip in new cases with 17,266 fresh infections and 6 deaths in the past 24 hours. The state currently has 3,30,447 lakh active cases, the majority of which are from Bengaluru.
In other news, the Karnataka government announced on Friday that it will lift the weekend curfew that was in place with an aim to control the spread of Covid-19 infections. However, the night curfew hours between 10 pm to 5 am every day will continue. The decision may be revised next week depending on the hospitalisation trends. A senior journalist who worked with a Kannada daily was killed in a freak accident when a truck overturned on him near Town Hall in the city on Sunday afternoon, police said.
Gangadhar Murthy (49) was on his way to his office on his motorbike when the tragedy occurred, police said. They said the truck driver had lost control of the vehicle and crashed against a road divider. The driver fled the spot after the accident.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said the state government will ensure 7,500 new National Cadet Corps cadets are raised and their training expenses of Rs 12,000 each is borne by it.

Karnataka reported 50,210 new Covid-19 cases, out of which 26,299 were recorded in Bangalore, and 19 deaths, nine in Bangalore, on Sunday. With 22,842 discharges, the positivity rate on Sunday stood at 22.77 per cent. The active cases in the state are 3,57,796 and in Bangalore are 2,31,000.

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s statue would be shifted to a suitable spot in front of the Vidhana Soudha, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Sunday.
Speaking to media persons after paying floral tributes to Netaji on the occasion of his birth anniversary, Bommai said, the statue which presently is behind the Vidhana Soudha near the western gate should be shifted to a suitable spot befitting the honour he deserved. A decision in this regard would be taken soon. Netaji’s next birth anniversary would be celebrated in front of Vidhana Soudha.
The state government would respond positively to the demands of various organisations which have been working with immense love and commitment for Netaji’s ideals, Bommai said.

Another video conference would be conducted to discuss all these issues by the end of January.
“We will discuss with legal counsels, our Water Resources Minister and Law Minister about the progress of the legal fight so far. How we should move ahead. What measures need to be taken to implement the projects in the interest of the state. Some cases are at a crucial stage, so we need to discuss once again with legal experts and leaders of the Opposition. We will formulate our stand after discussing all these issues at an all-party meeting to be held in the first week of February," the chief minister said.
Karnataka has conducted more than six crore Covid-19 tests since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020. State Health and Family Welfare Minister K Sudhakar said Karnataka crossed the milestone on Saturday, becoming only the third state in the country to do so.

The Bengaluru police have arrested a 28-year-old mechanical engineer for allegedly robbing a bank after he had lost his savings in stock trading. The police have recovered Rs 85.38 lakh worth of gold ornaments and cash from the accused.
The accused is identified as Dhiraj S, a resident of Kamakshipalya in Bengaluru, who worked in a private company. On January 14 around 6 pm, Dhiraj barged into a State Bank of India (SBI) branch at Madiwala wearing a mask. He brandished a knife at the bank staff and robbed Rs 3.76 lakh cash and 1.80 kg gold ornaments. Based on the complaint registered by branch manager Harish N, the police formed a team and identified the accused with the help of CCTV visuals. Read More

Hospital admissions at the peak of the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic is significantly less than that at peak of the first and second wave, according to a comparison of data from the three waves.
At the peak of the first wave in Oct 2020, hospitalisations were at 16%. During the second wave (May 2021), this rose to 21%. In comparison, the hospitalisation rate at the peak of the ongoing third wave (calculated as of Jan 20, 2022) is at 5%, according to data from the state health department.
After a decade of protests coupled with cycle rallies to highlight the plight of the more than 170-year-old Vengaiah Lake in K R Puram, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) announced its plans to rejuvenate the 65-acre waterbody at a cost of Rs 4 crore.
While the Karnataka Forest Department was the custodian of Vengaiah lake, a year ago, the waterbody was transferred to the civic body.

Karnataka has done six crore Covid-19 tests since the beginning of the pandemic, Health Minister K Sudhakar said on Twitter. He said that this makes Karnataka the third-highest in the country in this aspect.
Health Minister K Sudhakar on Saturday said that people who have been infected with Covid-19 can get the coronavirus vaccine only after three months of recovery. This is applicable for all doses, including the booster shot, he said.

A 57-year-old woman from a Shimoga village has been hospitalised with Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), reported news agency ANI. Shivamogga Health Officer Rajesh Suragihalli said that the patient was suffering from fever for a few days, following which her blood sample was collected and tested for KFD.
KFD, also known as monkey fever, is caused by a Kyasanur Forest disease virus, which primarily affects humans and monkeys. The disease is characterised by chills, frontal headache, body ache, and high fever for five to 12 days with a case fatality rate of 3 to 5 per cent.
The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation has ordered an inquiry into the incident in which a BMTC bus caught fire near in Bengaluru on Friday.
As many as 25 passengers were on board when the fire engulfed the bus. According to BMTC, all passengers and crew are safe.
The chief mechanical engineer and team has been directed to enquire and submit the detailed report on the cause of the incident, BMTC said in a release.

A recent study found that the southern states of India may witness heavier and more frequent rainfall and warmer summer maximum and winter minimum temperatures over the next three decades.
The study, titled ‘District-Level Changes in Climate: Historical Climate and Climate Change Projections for the Southern States of India’, was published by the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy. The researchers have studied the climate patterns of the period between 1991 and 2019 and have drawn a projection of the likely occurrences in south India. (Read more)
Bengaluru Metro train operation will be restored during weekends after the government decided to withdraw the weekend curfew today.
'Due to the withdrawal of weekend curfew by the Karnataka government, trains will run between 5 am to 11 pm from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays train operations will be from 7 am to 11 pm,' Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) said in a release.
Meanwhile, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation(BMTC) also decided to operate normal bus services from this weekend. (ENS)

As many as 49 elephants were killed across the country by hunters in 2021, with law-enforcement agencies arresting 77 accused, a Central government agency said in response to an RTI query.

Sixteen members of the senior men's hockey team were among the 33 COVID-19 cases detected on Friday at the Sports Authority of India's National Centre of Excellence here.
The positive cases came after 128 tests were conducted at the high-profile centre, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) said. Majority of them are asymptomatic and all of them have been isolated, SAI said but did not divulge the identities of those infected.
"16 athletes and one coach from the Senior Men's Hockey team, training at the centre ahead of the upcoming FIH Pro League in South Africa, have tested positive. They are all asymptomatic," the SAI said. Among the junior women's hockey girls training for the World Cup in April, 15 have tested positive. Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Friday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for planned installation of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's statue at the India Gate in Delhi. The statue will be installed on January 23 marking the 125th birth anniversary of the freedom fighter.
Bommai in a tweet said, "This statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at India Gate will remind us of his contributions and inspire the future generations."
The Karnataka government on Friday issued fresh guidelines after removing the weekend curfew from the list curbs to prevent spread of Covid-19 in the state. State Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar in a tweet informed about the new guidleines.
The state will continue with its night curfew, while restaurants, pubs, theatres will only function with 50 per cent capacity.
The current status quo for schools in Bengaluru, under the Covid-19 prevention measure limits till January 29. Across Karnataka, in schools the cases are still considerably high and decision on reopening will be taken after another review Karnataka education minister BC Nagesh said.
Except Bengaluru, each school to be considered one unit in Karnataka. In schools, if less number of Covid-19 infections are reported, three days closure is to be considered under state guidelines, if a cluster of cases are detected, seven days are recommended. (ENS)
FedEx Express, a subsidiary of leading global express transportation company FedEx Corp, on Friday announced the commencement of electric vehicle (EV) trials in India with Bengaluru to begin with, as part of its global goal to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2040.
The trial, which is expected to conclude within a month in Bengaluru, will test the vehicle technology within FedEx Express operations, assessing the vehicles' operational effectiveness on a standard route fully loaded with packages, the company said in a statement.
Following positive trial results, FedEx Express will extend the trial to Delhi, it said.
The company said that with last-mile delivery, burgeoning thanks to rapid e-commerce growth, each new electric vehicle added to the FedEx delivery fleet in India can reduce fuel consumption and emissions equivalent to five passenger cars. (PTI)
The Karnataka government on Friday said it will oppose the proposed water project at Hogenakkal along the border with Tamil Nadu stating that the neighbouring state cannot take up the work unilaterally.
"It has come to our notice through media reports that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has announced finalising a Detailed Project Report worth Rs 4,600 crore to undertake Phase-2 of the Hogenakkal project," state Irrigation Minister Govind Karjol said in a statement.
He said the neighbouring state has to undertake projects in Cauvery valley region according to the Cauvery Tribunal and Supreme Court orders related to water distribution. (PTI)

The CM also said that the state government has raised the per capita quota of rice for Anna Dasoha e from 4kg to 5kg. Ragi and Jowar too is being distributed in accordance with the food habits of the region. Ration is being provided for Mutts and other charity institutions which are engaged in Anna Dasoha. As for Akshara Dasoha the state government has launched Vidya Nidhi scheme for children of farmers, Rs150cr has been released for direct disbursement of scholarships for children of construction workers.

For nearly a month, a government college in Karnataka’s Udupi district has banned students from wearing hijab inside the classroom. Seven of the college’s Muslim students, who demanded that they be allowed to attend classes while wearing a hijab, have been denied entry.
The principal of the Government Women’s Pre-University College, Udupi, has said that the ban was being enforced to maintain “uniformity”.

Four people, allegedly associated with the Bajrang Dal have been arrested in connection with the assault on two persons at Nargund in Gadag district, one of whom succumbed to injuries.
According to police sources, Sameer Shahapur, a server in a roadside eatery in Nargund, and his friend Shamsher Khan Pathan, both aged about 19, were allegedly attacked by a group of people with rods and sharp objects, while the duo was riding on a motor bike, on January 16 night.

A recent study found that the southern states of India may witness heavier and more frequent rainfall and warmer summer maximum and winter minimum temperatures over the next three decades.
The study, titled ‘District-Level Changes in Climate: Historical Climate and Climate Change Projections for the Southern States of India’, was published by the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy. The researchers have studied the climate patterns of the period between 1991 and 2019 and have drawn a projection of the likely occurrences in south India.
The study analysis looked at two representative scenarios: medium emissions and high emissions. It also looked at all the districts of all the five southern states — Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu — and is a part of a larger study projecting climate change across all the states of India. Instances of match-fixing unearthed by the Bengaluru Police Crime Branch in 2019 in an investigation of alleged corruption involving cricket players and team managements in the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) T20 cricket tournament does not amount to cheating, the Karnataka High Court ruled while quashing a chargesheet against three players and a team official of the KPL.
A single-judge bench of Justice Sreenivas Harish Kumar ordered the quashing of a chargesheet filed against the former Karnataka cricket captain, C M Gautam, two players Abrar Kazi and Amit Mavi and the owner of the Belagavi Panthers team, Asfak Ali Thara. (Read more)
The kin of Covid-19 victims from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in Yadgir district in North Karnataka have complained that the Rs 1 lakh compensation cheques they received from the state government have bounced. Family members said their banks provided various reasons for the same, leaving them running from pillar to post.
Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai told reporters Friday he had received reports regarding the cheques bouncing and had instructed officials to rectify the issue immediately. "Cases have only been reported from Yadgir district. I have told officials to immediately release the compensation," he said in Bengaluru. Former chief minister B S Yediyurappa had announced a death compensation of Rs 1 lakh to BPL families that lost their earnings member to the pandemic. (Read more)
