Tumkur: JDS MLA Sathyanarayana dies

B Sathyanarayana, the legislator from Sira constituency (Tumkur), passed away Tuesday night in Bengaluru. He was 69 and had been suffering from liver cirrhosis for the past few years.

According to doctors at Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, the death was confirmed at 10.45 pm. "He was suffering for a long period of time with advanced chronic liver disease. He was in a very critical state and was under treatment at the intensive care unit for secondary to septicemia with multisystem organ failure," Dr Manish Rai, Hospital Director confirmed in a statement.

Bengaluru’s Covid-19 mortality rate lowest among metros, claims Medical Education Minister

Even as 1,134 people have succumbed to Covid-19 in Bengaluru so far, Karnataka Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar Tuesday claimed that the city’s mortality rate is the lowest among other metro cities in India.

It is satisfying that the mortality rate in Karnataka and Bengaluru is better compared to other states and metro cities, Sudhakar said.

“Bengaluru records the lowest mortality rate compared to other metros i.e 115 deaths, while the state records 39 deaths per million population. Delhi records five times and Maharashtra three times more than Karnataka in Covid deaths per million population,” he tweeted.

Karnataka gets 681 ventilators under PM Cares fund, officials tell CM

Top officials of the Karnataka Department of Health and Family Welfare Services Tuesday confirmed receipt of 681 ventilators by the state under the PM-Cares fund.

"Of these, 335 (including 166 in Bengaluru) have already been added to hospitals to be used to assist Covid-19 patients in need of the same. The remaining 346 ventilators will be installed by the end of this week," officials apprised Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.

The CM had held a review meeting over the phone to assess the Covid-19 situation in the state from his hospital bed in Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru.

Karnataka: Heavy rain in coastal districts, Malnad

Heavy rains along with gusty wind have been reported over the last two days in coastal and Malnad region of Karnataka.

Heavy rainfall in the Brahmagiri range of Kodagu district has created a flood threat in the area. According to the district administration, Bhagamandala in Madikeri has reported 170.5 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours. Triveni Sangama at Bhagamandala is also full.

Due to heavy rain in the region, the inflow of water to Harangi Reservoir has increased. Already 5,500 cusecs of water is released into Harangi river from the reservoir.

Meanwhile, Mangaluru, Udupi and Bantwal taluks also reported heavy rain and winds which have uprooted many trees and electric poles. Chikmagalur district in the Malnad region has also reported heavy rainfall in the last two days. Heavy downpour was reported in Koppa, Sringeri, Narasimharajapura, Mudigere taluks in Chikmagalur district.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday has forecast heavy rainfall in several parts of Karnataka. "Isolated very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall likely over South Interior and Coastal Karnataka during next 4-5 days", IMD said in a press release.

Prohibitory orders imposed in Kodagu during Ram Temple bhoomi pujan

In order to avoid any untoward incident on August 5, Wednesday during bhoomi pujan of Ram Temple in Ayodhya, prohibitory orders have been imposed in Kodagu district.

The order has been issued under Section 144 of CrPC to prevent any untoward incident, Kodagu district administration said in an order on Tuesday.

The prohibitory order will be in force from August 4 midnight to 12 am on August 5 in the district, Kodagu District Commissioner Annies Kanmani Joy said in the order.

Ram Temple Bhoomi Pujan: Section 144, liquor ban in Kalaburagi

In a bid to "maintain law and order" in the wake of the 'bhoomi pujan' scheduled to be held in Ayodhya's Ram Temple on Wednesday, section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPc) has been imposed in Kalaburagi.

The prohibitory orders and a liquor ban will be in place from 3 pm Tuesday (August 4) to 6 am on Thursday (August 6), the order issued by Gulbarga Police Commissioner N Satish Kumar stated.

Earlier, section 144 was imposed in Mangaluru as well.

IISc Bengaluru opens testing facility after 19 people on campus test positive

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru has set up a dedicated Covid-19 testing facility for fast detection of coronavirus infection among people living on its campus. The premier science institute had obtained the approval to set up the in-campus lab from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

“IISc. has got approval from BBMP to start a sample collection facility for COVID-19 testing and for testing the samples at IISc’s COVID-19 test centre to obtain results quickly,” Deputy Registrar Veeranna Kammar said in a press statement.

Officials added that the Institute is in the process of contacting hospitals in the city to help manage dedicated Covid care centres for mild and asymptomatic patients, and for more serious cases being treated at hospitals.

Fake currency notes seized in Bengaluru from African nationals

The Bengaluru Central Crime Branch (CCB) Police on Tuesday morning raided 35 houses where African nationals and foreigners were staying in Hennur and Banaswadi area and seized fake currency.

Speaking to Indianexpress.com, Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime said, “Special drive was undertaken by CCB Police against illegal staying of foreigners today early morning. Around 120 CCB officers raided houses in Hennur, Bagalur, Kothanur and checked 85 foreigners and found 20 Africans to be staying without valid passport and visa.”

“We have also seized fake currency of Indian rupees, US dollars, UK Pounds along with laptops It is suspected that they are involved in cyber offenses, further investigation on,” he added.

Doctor accused of sexual harassment of COVID-19 patient at Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru

A sexual harassment case has been filed against a doctor at the Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru by a COVID-19 patient.

According to the complaint, a doctor working at the Trauma Care Centre, which is a designated Covid-19 facility in Victoria Hospital allegedly sexually harassed the patient on July 25 around 10 pm.

Based on the complaint, the VV Puram police have registered a sexual harassment case and the hospital has constituted a committee to probe the allegation.

Siddaramaiah admitted to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru

Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly and former chief minister Siddaramaiah, who confirmed Covid-19 infection Tuesday morning, has been admitted to Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, where CM Yediyurappa is currently on treatment for the same.

"Former Karnataka CM & Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah is admitted to Manipal Hospitals for evaluation of fever and the antigen test for COVID-19 is positive. He is doing well and is stable currently," Manipal Hospital confirmed in a statement.

Refrain from defamatory statements, D K Shivakumar appeals to Congress workers

After police arrested a Karnataka Congress member over derogatory comments and defamatory post on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, KPCC president D K Shivakumar requested party workers to refrain from making such remarks.

“I appeal to Congress workers not to make defamatory statements against any political leader on matters of health and other issues on social media platforms. It is not in our culture to wish bad for others. Congress is a party that exemplifies brotherhood and humanity,” Shivakumar tweeted.

The Karnataka Police arrested a Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) IT cell secretary on Monday for posting a derogatory and defamatory post regarding the health of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

According to the Bengaluru police, they arrested Anand Prasad. The police have booked a case against him under section 153(A) of the IPC with the Cubbon Park police station. According to police, few people have posted a defaming tweet on the health conditions of Amit Shah, who tested positive for COVID-19. Under this post Anand Prasad had replied to the tweet in a provoking and derogatory manner.

Siddaramaiah tests positive for Covid-19

Karnataka Leader of Opposition and former CM Siddaramaiah has tested positive for COVID-19. The 71-year-old Congress leader has been admitted to a hospital on the advice of doctors as a precaution.

"I have been tested positive for #Covid19 & also been admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors as a precaution. I request all those who had come in contact with me to check out for symptoms & to quarantine themselves," he tweeted Tuesday morning.

Karnataka third in list of Indian states with most active cases

With 74,469 active cases, Karnataka is third on the list of states with the highest active caseload as on August 3, only behind Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Since March 8 when the first case of coronavirus in the state was confirmed in Bengaluru, the state has recorded a cumulative 1,39,571 Covid-19 cases.

As many as 2594 people have succumbed to the infection from across 30 districts. Meanwhile, 62,500 people have recovered from coronavirus.

However, the state recorded more discharges (4776) than fresh coronavirus cases (4752) on Monday.

Bengaluru govt hospitals ready more ICU beds

With coronavirus cases in Bengaluru projected to increase from the current 60,998 cases on Monday to 1.37 lakh by the first week of September as per some estimates and hospital bed requirement to over 17,000 from the availability of around 9,000, the government is scrambling to increase capacity.

Across 19 government hospitals in Bengaluru, there are only 152 ICU beds, of which 99 are ventilator beds. Only nine ICU beds, six with ventilator, were vacant as of Monday evening, according to a centralised hospital bed database for the city.

Bengaluru: 1497 fresh cases, 11,872 active containment zones

As the number of fresh Covid-19 cases and fatalities linked to the pandemic surge in Bengaluru, the capital city alone reported 1497 new cases while the same was 4752 across Karnataka on Monday.

Meanwhile, the number of active containment zones in the city comprising 198 wards rose to 11,872.

The health department also attributed 27 more deaths that took place over the last few days to Bengaluru's death toll on Monday. With this, 1104 deaths have been reported cumulatively from the city.

Section 144 to be imposed in Mangaluru ahead of Ram Mandir 'bhoomi pujan'

In the wake of the Ram Temple 'bhoomi pujan' scheduled to be held in Ayodhya on Wednesday (August 5), section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) has been imposed in Karnataka's Mangaluru from 8 pm on August 4 (Tuesday) to 6 am on August 6 (Thursday).

Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Vikash Kumar Vikash Monday clarified that the impositon was announced "to avoid any untoward incident" related to the occassion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh on August 5.
