Mucormycosis, commonly known as black fungus, which was till now affecting only adults, has been detected among children as two cases were reported in rural Karnataka. A 11-year-old girl from Ballari district and 14-year-old boy from Chitradurga district have been infected with the fungal disease. Both are undergoing treatment at government hospitals here and their condition is said to be serious.

The DN Nagar police on Sunday arrested a man from Karnataka for allegedly raping a woman after promising to marry her. A police team nabbed him in Karnataka and will bring him back to Mumbai on Monday, after which he will be produced before a magistrate court.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar reached out to the farmers of Hubli-Dharwad on Monday to resolve their issues at a time when the state government is seemingly oblivious to their plight and hardship, KPCC said in a statement.
“Our farmers are struggling every day for every small thing in this hour of crisis. Their vegetables, fruits & other produce is rotting as they get just a two hour window between 6-8 AM to sell them which is too little time for them,” Shivakumar said addressing the media at Navalur village in Dharwad.

“The sowing season has started and farmers don’t have fertilisers, seeds and DAP. Even MSP is not assured. Karnataka’s Chilli, is amongst the best in the country but our farmers are unable to sell it,” Shivakumar said.
“Last year, the Congress party workers helped the farmers by buying their farm produce across the state wherever possible and also assisted them financially. Today also, I have come to meet the farmers, hear their grievances and help them in any which way possible,” Shivakumar said while also criticising the government that it is more interested in working for the interest of liquor lobby than farmers.
“The Government is giving permission to Liquor sellers till evening but they are not giving enough time to farmers to sell their produce. This clearly shows who this government empathises with,” Shivakumar said.
CM Yediyurappa has announced financial support of Rs 3,500 per month to children (aged below 10 years) who lost both their parents, single parent, adopted person or the family breadwinner to the pandemic. The Karnataka government announced the CM Bala Seva Yojana based on suggestions by the Centre.
Yediyurappa explained that children aged below 10 with no caretakers or guardians will be taken care of by registered childcare institutions. “These children will be provided admission in residential schools such as Kasturba Balika Vidyalaya, Morarji Desai, and Kittur Rani Chennmma,” he said.

BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta said that it was important for Bengaluru to focus on vaccinations in a bid to prevent the outbreak of another wave.
Citing the number of vaccinations exceeding a lakh for the first time on Friday, he said, “The supply issues with regard to Covid vaccines that we had earlier are gradually being resolved now.”

The Karnataka Tourism Society (KTS) has requested for a deferment of paying property tax for 2021-22 fiscal citing the hurdles faced by the sector due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis.
“The due date for Property Tax annually payable to the Palikes, Municipal Corporations, and Town Municipal Councils is extended with 5% rebated till 31st May 2021. Due to the complete halt of business, request you to kindly extend payment date till 31st October for 50% payment with 5% rebate and extend the time for balance 50% till 31st March 2022 without any penalties,” a letter from KTS addressed to CM Yediyurappa read.

A Bangladeshi woman, who was allegedly gangraped in Bengaluru by four of her compatriots, has been brought to the city from Kerala, according to police.
"Our team traced her in Kerala on Saturday and bought her from Kozhikode on Sunday," the Deputy Commissioner of Police Bengaluru East Dr S D Sharanappa said.
The 22-year-old woman was subjected to medical tests at the Government Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals for the assault and rape. According to police, she was trafficked to India by Mohammed Babu, a resident of Dhubri in Assam, about three years ago.
The IIM Bangalore Alumni Association (IIMBAA) Saturday launched a fundraising initiative to vaccinate close to a lakh people from the underprivileged sections of society. The drive is expected to make Covid vaccines reach the country’s urban and rural poor, as part of their Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Prevention plans during the pandemic.

As many as 10.98 lakh citizens, including residents and staff working in over 950 apartment complexes in Bengaluru, are expected to benefit from the mass Covid-19 vaccination drive initiated by the Bangalore Apartments’ Federation (BAF).
Named #Vax4All, the campaign will be held to facilitate vaccination support to residents’ welfare associations across the city, organisers added.
“The RWAs desirous of participating in this campaign can write to BAF at info@baf.org.in. BAF is partnering with Manipal Hospitals, Fortis Healthcare, Narayana Health and Apollo Hospitals to facilitate community-level vaccination camps,” the Federation stated.

The Congress Saturday asked for a police case to be registered against Lok Sabha member Tejasvi Surya and his uncle, BJP MLA Ravi Subramanya, for allegedly “seeking commission” for “arranging Covid-19 vaccines” at a private hospital in Karnataka, after a couple of audio clips went viral. Congress also demanded a suo-motu FIR against the BJP MLA for “taking commission” for vaccines.
In one such audio, a social worker named Venkatesh is heard questioning why each dose of vaccine was priced at Rs 900 when a voice from the other side, purported to be of a staff member of a private hospital located in south Bengaluru, says that the hospital had to pay Rs 700 to (Basavanagudi) MLA Ravi Subramanya who “arranged the vaccines” for them.

An official in charge of the oxygen supply system at the SNR Hospital in Karnataka’s Kolar district, around 60 km from Bengaluru, has a desperate story to tell about the night of April 25, when he and others at the hospital tried to provide oxygen for 250 Covid-19 patients – with an oxygen supply system that could support only 120 patients.
“As the number of patients in the district hospital kept growing we told the officials that the system cannot support 250 patients needing oxygen. Nobody listened. On April 25 we sat the whole night pouring water on the vapouriser of the oxygen system to ensure it does not freeze up and cause a drop in the oxygen pressure,” said Somanna, the technician.
“Even the district surgeon was with us pouring water. He said he would arrange a tanker of water to keep the oxygen system from freezing up and choking supplies,” the technician said.

According to BBMP, the solution is citrus fruit-based with oil extracts and bio-enzyme as base.
Karthik Narayan, CEO of Sugardhana, part of this initiative, said that in Tirunelveli, the same solution was sprayed for nine days and a 33% reduction in cases was seen by the municipal administration there.
Last year, the BBMP had sprayed chemical disinfectants using drones in the city in an attempt to keep Covid-19 at bay.

Even as most people in Bengaluru chose to stay indoors adhering to the extended lockdown announced across the state till June 7, the Bengaluru City Police (BCP) seized 2,136 vehicles from different parts of the city between 10 am and 8 pm, for allegedly violating the guidelines during the weekend.
According to data shared by BCP, 1821 two-wheelers, 134 three-wheelers, and 181 four-wheelers were seized during inspections held across the city. Meanwhile, 83 cases were filed under relevant sections of the National Disaster Management Act (NDMA), as per an official release.

According to the DN Nagar police, the accused is Kumar Hegde, 33, who worked as actress Kangana Ranaut’s bodyguard.
An FIR was registered against him on May 19. In her complaint, the woman told the police that she knew Hegde for eight years. In June 2020, Hegde proposed marriage and she accepted his proposal, she said. Hegde then reportedly told her they should enter into a live-in relationship for a few months as they would be married soon, and the complainant agreed.

They had contracted COVID-19 but were not aware of it, a health official said adding they were admitted to the hospital after they developed complications.
“Two children are undergoing treatment for the black fungus infection at Government Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals. They are suffering from Acute Juvenile Diabetes (AJD),” a senior health official told PTI.

Karnataka on Sunday reported 20,378 fresh cases and 382 deaths taking the infections and fatalities to 25,87,827 and 28,679 fatalities, the Health department said. The state has 3,42,010 active cases whereas the total discharges stood at 22,17,117 with the recovery of 28,053 people.
Bengaluru Urban district, which had become an epicentre of infections during the peak of the second wave of COVID-19 and had exceeded 26,000 cases a day, reported 4,734 infections and 213 fatalities. The city's COVID tally and fatalities was highest compared to any other part of Karnataka. The city has so far reported 11,59,237 infections and 13,104 deaths. There were 1,62,625 active cases.
Hassan district emerged as the second major COVID hotspot with 2,227 and 11 fatalities. According to the health bulletin, Mysuru logged 1,559 fresh infections followed by Belagavi (1,171), Chitradurga (805), Tumakuru (773), Dakshina Kannada (727) and others.
There were 1,38,809 tests done on Sunday including 1,24,232 using RT-PCR and other methods. So far, 2.96 crore tests were done cumulatively, the department added. As on Sunday, 1.34 crore inoculations were done in the state comprising first and second dose of vaccine.
The positivity rate for the day was 14.68 per cent and Case Fatality Rate was 1.87 per cent, the department said. (PTI)
