Karnataka minister: All Muslims, Christians will be with RSS in future

Rural Development Minister KS Eshwarappa made the remark after Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri told Congress MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan that the day was not far when everyone would have to accept the RSS—a statement Congress members took exception to.

Karnataka Rural Development Minister and senior BJP leader K S Eshwarappa Thursday declared in the Assembly that all Muslims and Christians in the country will associate themselves with the RSS in the future, sparking an outcry.

The statement came after Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri told Congress MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan that the day is not far when everyone will have to accept RSS as “our RSS”, which Congress legislators opposed.

The RSS issue came up during the Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah’s debate on law and order situation in the state where he made a reference to the organisation while speaking about his friendship with a few BJP leaders and Ministers in the assembly. “It is important to maintain mutual respect, irrespective of which political ideology one believed in, first comes personal relationships and then comes party differences- BJP, RSS, Congress and others,” Siddaramaiah said.

At this time, the Speaker in a lighter vein asked Siddaramaiah, “why are you feeling troubled about our RSS?”. When Siddaramaiah was clarifying the question asked by the speaker, Congress MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan jumped in and questioned, “You as a Speaker are saying ‘Our RSS’ sitting on the Chair?”

To this, Kageri responded: “Of course, it is ‘our’ RSS. What else can it be? Sooner or later you will even have to call it your RSS.” To this, few Congress MLAs said that day would never come. Revenue Minister R Ashoka said that whether one liked it or not, all top political designations were occupied by leaders who come from RSS. Congress legislators called it the country’s “misfortune”.

At this time, Eshwarappa said: “All Muslims and Christians in the country, if not today, some day in the future, will associate themselves with RSS. There is no doubt about it.”

This statement further irked Congress MLAs.

After more heated exchanges, the Speaker adjourned the Assembly until the afternoon.
