Days after a video showing a youth purportedly pushing a police sub-inspector and obstructing him in performing his duties surfaced on social media platforms, the Surat police on Sunday registered a case against the accused student and issued a notice asking him to appear before the investigating officer in the next two days.

The incident took place on Thursday when police, acting on a tip-off, reached a parking area on the roadside of a restaurant on Althan main road in Surat and checked a parked car. Police asked the 19-year-old seated in the front seat to alight from the car. The youth had a heated exchange with police when they tried to check a thermocol box inside the car.

The youth, identified as Jainam Shah, 19, allegedly pushed police sub-inspector B B Patel of Althan police station when he tried to open the back door of the car to take the thermocol box. The youth called up his father, Samir Shah, an event management firm owner, who was inside the restaurant.

Police recovered nine beer cans worth Rs 1,500 and arrested Samir Shah and the car owner Vraj Shah, under the prohibition act. Police also detained Jainam Shah. They were released by police later.

According to sources, the birthday celebration of Samir Shah was taking place in the hotel and they managed to arrange beer for the guests. In his statements to the police, Vraj said that it was Samir who had kept beer tins in the car.

A youth recorded the scuffle between Jainam Shah and PSI B B Patel and uploaded the video on social media and it went viral on social media. Patel, meanwhile, went on leave.

On Sunday, constable Jitesh Jeevabhai, who was part of the team that raided the car, lodged a complaint against Jainam Shah with Althan police station. Police booked Jainam Shah under BNS 121(1) (Voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant while performing his duties) and 221 (Obstructing a public servant in discharge of their public function).

Althan police inspector D D Chauhan told The Indian Express that a notice has been issued to Jainam asking him to remain present before the investigating officer in next two days. “We have collected CCTV footage and digital video recorders outside the restaurant. Jainam is a student of Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Gandhinagar,” Chauhan said.

Asked about the delay in registering the case against Jainam, Chauhan said that the PSI went on leave and that the student was booked based on the complaint of a police constable

“We have also arrested Samir Shah and Vraj Shah under the prohibition act,” Chauhan added.
