Two similar cases of alleged suicides in a single day on Friday, with no suicide notes left behind, had the Bapod police station looking for the triggers that could have pushed two women to end their lives in their respective residences.

A 19-year-old student of Home Science in MS University on Friday allegedly died by suicide due to hanging at her residence at Ajwa road while her family members were home. In the absence of a suicide note, the family of the deceased, Umera Campwala, is “at a loss”, police said.

Police Inspector MR Sangada of Bapod police station told this newspaper, “According to the family’s statement, the deceased prepared an omelette and ate it at noon before locking herself in the bedroom. Her family assumed she was resting but when she did not respond, they knocked down the door and found her hanging. She was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.”

The police, which has registered a case of accidental death, said that Umera’s parents had earlier assumed that she was “fast asleep” and therefore, not responding to them knocking at the door.

“Since she has not left behind a note, we have seized her phone and sent it for forensic examination… Her family has also said that she was a bright student and had no such (academic) pressure. We are trying to ascertain the motive,” Sangada said.

‘Was set to get married this month’

Meanwhile, the police station received another case of alleged suicide of a 25-year-old woman, Diksha Shama. Sangada said that the woman was to be married on February 25. He said, “No suicide note has been left behind in this case too. The family says they are not aware of what must have triggered the deceased to take such a drastic step while preparations were on for her marriage…”
