The Malad police Friday arrested a Vadodara-based businessman for allegedly duping a businesswoman in Mumbai.
The complainant, Priti Pawar, 48, who co-owns a centre providing a range of medical services on Goregaon Mulund Link Road, had ordered an advanced machine for Colon Hydrotherapy and an Infrared Sauna from a company in Gujarat after speaking with the owner on the phone. The woman procured a loan and paid the person for the machines, but the accused allegedly sent plywood and cardboard in the parcel.
Pawar, while surfing the Internet, learnt that a Vadodara-based company, Nexorth Orthopedic Pvt Ltd, supplies the machines that she required. She, thereafter, spoke with Dr Nishant Mehta, who claimed to be the owner of the company. Pawar also sent one of her husband’s Vadodara-based friends to visit the office of Nexorth Orthopedic and verify if the machines were available with the company, the police said.
The FIR stated that the victim booked the machines by paying Rs 1 lakh in advance to Nexorth Orthopedic Pvt Ltd through her company and also deposited a cheque of Rs 1,19,250. She also took a bank loan of Rs 7,01,600 for the machines.
The complainant then paid Rs 16 lakh for the machines. But on November 17, Mehta called and claimed the vehicle transporting the machines had met with an accident, and there would be a delay in sending the machines. The complainant suspected foul play and asked the accused to return her money. Mehta claimed that he had transferred the money and shared a bank transfer slip. But the money was not credited in the complainant’s account, and the transfer slip turned out to be fake. The accused then issued a cheque, which also bounced.
Mehta then allegedly called the victim and said he was sending a fresh set of machines, but the boxes, when opened, were found to contain only plywood and cardboard.
“She then approached the Malad police station and registered a cheating case against Mehta on December 5. The police verified the facts and arrested Mehta, and he was produced in the court on Saturday and remanded in police custody for three days,” said Dushyant Chavan, senior inspector posted at the Malad police station.
