Two labourers die while cleaning manhole in Ahmedabad

Two Uttar Pradesh-based men allegedly died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a gutter manhole on Friday afternoon in Ahmedabad’s Bopal area, police said on Saturday. The duo had reportedly entered the manhole to manually clean it when the incident occurred, said the police. According to the police, the workers might have inhaled noxious gases from the sewage line, leading to their deaths.

Officials confirmed to The Indian Express that no safety equipment was found at the spot. The Bopal area falls under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Police identified the victims as Krishna Kori (21) and Vikas Kori (19). Both were declared dead at a local private hospital where they were admitted after they were found in an unconscious state in the manhole by firefighters.

Providing information about the incident, Fire Station Officer (STO) Ghanshyam Patel said, “At about 2 pm we received a call that two men were found unconscious inside the gutter line near the Garden Bungalows society. We retrieved them and rushed them to the hospital.”

Bopal Police Inspector BT Gohil said that the bodies of the victims have been handed over to their family members. An Accidental Death (AD) report has been filed in connection with the matter, however, the police believe that the families will return to file complaints after completing the last rites of the two men.

PI Gohil said, “These men were labourers working for contractor Mukesh Thakur. On Friday, they had been called to clean the drainage line near a society. While working inside the manhole they fell unconscious”.

“The fire department rescued the two men and they were dispatched to the hospital via ambulances. One was declared dead on arrival while the other died during treatment,” said Gohil.
