A one-and-a-half-year-old boy, son of a school teacher, died of drowning after falling into a two-foot-deep artificial pond on the premises of a hotel in Surat on Monday night.
The deceased toddler has been identified as Krishiv Savaliya, police said.
The boy had come to the hotel along with his parents to attend the birthday party of a trustee of a school where his father works as a teacher.
According to details received from police, Vijay Savaliya, a resident of Yogi Chowk in Surat, was attending a birthday party along with his wife and son at a private hotel’s banquet room at Pal area in Surat when the toddler wandered off.
Krishiv walked out of the door of the banquet hall, walked up to a small artificial water pond on the hotel premises, and fell inside, according to the police.
After a short while, when his parents noticed his absence, they began a search for him, police added.
Around the same time, a guest seated near the main gate of the hotel found something floating on the artificial pond’s surface and informed a waiter. Krishiv was fished out of the pond and rushed to the nearby private hospital where he was declared dead on arrival by doctors, Pal police station inspector Shital Shah told The Indian Express.
Sources said that at least 50 couples, accompanied by their children, were invited to the party for the 75th birthday celebration of a school trustee.
On learning about the accident, police arrived at the hotel and checked CCTV footage in which Krishiv was seen strolling out from the doors of the banquet hall and falling into the artificial pond moments later.
Said Inspector Shah, “Krishiv’s parents were busy with something when the child walked out of the banquet hall’s main door, which had been opened with some guests entering or exiting the venue. He walked out of the hall, saw the artificial pond, and fell inside.”
An accidental death complaint has been registered in the matter, said Inspector Shah.
Apart from his parents, Krishiv is survived by an older brother who is around eight years old, she added.
