A fire broke out at Shiv Shakti Textile market on Ring Road in Surat on Wednesday. This was the second fire at the market in two days. While Tuesday’s incident claimed one life, no casualty was reported on Wednesday.
Wednesday’s fire engulfed textile trading shops from the lower basement till the fifth floor. Surat city Mayor, Municipal Commissioner, and police officers reached the spot after learning about the fire incident on Wednesday afternoon. Several lakh metres of synthetic fabrics were gutted in the fire. The loss incurred by the traders is estimated to be over hundreds of crores of rupees.
Rajubhai Gamit, a maintenance staff, was the first to notice smoke at the lower basement around 8am on Tuesday, and immediately informed the fire department control room.
Sources at the Shiv Shakti market said only security staffers posted at the entry and exit gates and some other employees were present at the market when the fire broke out on Wednesday.
Led by Chief Fire Officer Basant Pareek, over hundreds of firefighters were involved in firefighting operation on Wednesday.
Sources in the fire department said that the blaze started at the basement, and spread across floors. The operation, started around 8.40 am and continued till 4 pm.
Surat City Mayor Daxesh Mavani, Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agrawal, and top police officers also reached the spot. Nearby markets were kept closed, and the entire stretch of the road was blocked for public use owing to the fire. CFO Pareek said, “Hundreds of firemen are working to the bring the fire under control. The market was empty when the fire broke out.”
