The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Tuesday arrested a Senior Account Officer and Assistant Account Officer of the Central Goods and Services Tax for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a nursery owner.
The complainant in the case told the police that a few months agos, he secured a contract to supply plants with pots to the CGST office in Vapi, which he “fulfilled in a timely manner”. He submitted a bill of Rs 29,000 to the CGST office accounts department and was regularly visiting and meeting the accountants to clear the dues. During one of his visits a few days ago, CGST Assistant Account officer Kapil Jain, in the presence of Senior Account officer Ravishanker Jha, allegedly demanded Rs 2,000 to get the bills cleared.
The nursery owner then contacted the ACB and lodged a complaint against both the officers. On Tuesday, a trap was laid at the office of Kapil Jain, where Ravishanker Jha was also present. The complainant went inside and handed over the bribe amount of Rs 2,000 to them, and left the office.
A team of ACB officers, who were in plain clothes, soon reached the office and nabbed the duo. They were brought to the Valsad ACB office and were arrested under multiple sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Surat Assistant Director of ACB R R Chaudhary said, “We are questioning them.”
