Gujarat Minister of State of Home Harsh Sanghavi Tuesday visited the Sabarmati Central Jail and inspected barracks, jail kitchen and the jail hospital, along with conducting meetings with jail officials.
According to a press note issued by the government, Sanghavi directed jail officials to develop programmes to reform habitual offenders, rid them of their “fundamentalist mentalities” and to reintegrate them in the society.
Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed is among the high-profile inmates of the jail. Besides Ahmed, a key accused in the 2005 killing of BSP MLA Raju Pal and several convicts of the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blast case are lodged in the Sabarmati jail here.
Ahmed, a former Member of Parliament, was recently booked in Uttar Pradesh in connection with the killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the Raju Pal murder case. Umesh Pal was shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24.
Sources said Sanghavi visited the high-security jail in the evening and held a meeting for nearly an hour with senior officials, including Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) KLN Rao.
As directed by the Supreme Court, Ahmed was transferred to the high-security prison in Ahmedabad from Naini jail in Uttar Pradesh in June 2019.
