As many as 36 cases of false claims of Covid compensation were reported from two districts alone, the state informed the Gujarat Assembly Tuesday.
In response to a starred question by Congress MLA Tushar Chaudhary, the state government said that 32 false compensation claim cases were reported from Gandhinagar and four from Sabarkantha. In Gandhinagar, compensation worth Rs 16 lakh was handed over against these false claims, and another Rs 2 lakh in Sabarkantha.
When asked if any police action has been taken against these claims, the House was informed that police complaints against 32 cases in Gandhinagar have been registered while the process is still on in four Sabarkantha cases.
Responding to MLA Chaudhary during the Question Hour discussion Tuesday, Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said that if required, police complaints will be registered in these cases too.
However, no money has been recovered from these false claims as of December 31, 2023. The state government stated that since the case is under trial in court, no money has been recovered yet.
In March 2022, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Supreme Court that four states, including Gujarat, have reported the highest number of fake Covid-19 compensation claims. The other three states were Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala.
In June 2021, the Supreme Court passed an order stating that families of those who died due to Covid-19 must receive Rs 50,000 compensation.
